Clyde Wilhclm, riding stables con cessionaire at Lake of the Woods and Lily Glen at Howard Prairie, led the ride. Members of the party included Mrs. Marcel LcPiniec, county parks and recreation commissioner from the Applcgate, Neil Lcdward, county parks and rec Tcation director, and his wife. This picture was taken as the group crossed a meadow. Riders Inaugurate Trip Between Lakes Eleven riders inaugurated a horseback trip between , Lake of the Woods resort and ' the Lily Glen riding stables at Hnwird Prairie lake last Sunday. The trip pointed out the scenic beauties of the area, revealed some wildlife, and also indicated a strong need for a more vigorous grass and tree seeding program on the acres of burned over BLM land near Howard Prairie. The party consisted of Neil Ledward, Jackson county parks and recreation director, his wife; Mrs. Marcel Le Piniec, county parks commis sioner from the Applcgate, and a number of teenagers. Created by Wilhelms The group was greeted by Clyde and Betty Wilhelm, concessionaires at both Lake of the Woods and Howard . Prairie riding stables. Neatness and cleanliness ot the grounds and buildings is a fettlih with the Wilhelms who leel the quickest way to drive away prospective customers is with piles ot manure and big black flies. The party left single file, and most of the morning part of the trip was over the spongy woodland trails through tall fir trees. Various species of trees and plants labeled with wood stakes set by the area's Boy Scouts were pointed out to the party. : Wilhelm, who has been run ning the Lake of the Woods concession for five years, j spaced out the rest stops for horses and riders. Following a lunch slop, the afternoon part of the trip was mostly through open country. The "bird cages," chicken wire enclosures around ex perimental grass .and tree plots aroused the curiosity of riders. The last two or three hours of the trip was over rocks, downed and charred slumps and trees and acres of thistle in Daley Prairie, Goy's Butte and Beaver Dam creek areas. At Lily Glen thirsty riders gulped glasses of brackish drinking water, which point ed up the need for a well. pump and connecting pipe line. Although provided for in the new fiscal year budget, the county court hs been re' luctant to finance such facil ities "until we see if the Wil helms are going to make it or not."
