Bedford, Crater Athletes Head lor Shrine Grid Drills Four Medford athletes and one from Crater High depart ed Saturday morning to at tend a two-week practice ses lion in preparation for the an nual Shriners State vs. Metro politan All-Star football game to be held at Multnomah Sta dium in Portland on Aug. 17. Representing Medford on the State team will be high .- school graduates Dan Miles, Jack Lowrey, Gary Griffin and Lloyd Hammons. Mike Glines is the ex-Crater star. Miles, who plans to attend Oregon State university on an athletic scholarship, is working this summer as a trampoline instructor for the city park and recreation de partment. Dan, a grid quarter back, played American Le gion baseball this summer and has been keeping in shape for athletic events by long distance bicycle rides and ten nis. Lowery To OSU Lowery, who will also at tend OSU in the fall, works daily at the White City Ply wood co. Jack lists his favor ite sports as water skiing and other ' recreational sports, workout session for the ex Tornado halfback include running and long - distance rides on the bicycle. Griffin plans on majoring In coaching or business ad ministration at Linfield col lege this fall. Gary played linebacker for the Medford varsity and trained daily for the Shrine game by working out with the other players in sessions at the high school. H i s favorite recreational Antelope Tag Drawings Held Portland - About 40 inter ested hunters were on hand last Tuesday at the game com C mission's Portland headquar- ters to participate in or to watch the antelope tag draw ings to determine successful applicants for the limited 1963 season scheduled Aug. 17 through 21, A total of 3,860 hunters filed applications for the 650 lags allotted in the seven ante lope hunting areas, which was considerably more hunters than the number filing a year ! ago. The odds on individual success ran from about 3 to 1 in Area VII to as high as 10 to 1 in Area II. In Area I, a total of 349 hunters filed applications for the 75 tags available. Area II received 722 applications for 75 tags. Area III had 634 ap plications for 100 tags. A total of 1,211 hunters vied for 175 tags allotted for Area IV. Ap plications numbered 404 in Area V, with 100 tags allotted. Area VI had 386 applications for 75 tags, and Area VII had 144 applicants trying their luck for 50 lags allotted. The drawing sequence as determined by participating hunters was 5, 8, 7, 0 and 6. Although all numbers from 1 to 10 were drawn to round out the sequence, the large number of applicants for each area required only two or three digits to fill each area tag quota. If hunters can remember their application number, all applications ending in the digit 5 were credited to the winning column. The number 5 winner included applica tions ending in 8, Area III re quired 24 drawn from digit 8, and Area IV required 63 ap plications with ending digit 8. In Area V all applications ending in the digit 8 were successful, plus 70 ending in the digit 7. Successful appli cants in Area VI included all applications ending in 8. plus 11 ending in the digit 7. In Area VII, successful appli cants Included all those end ing in 8, 7, and 0, plus one ap plication ending in the digit 6. A complete roster of suc cessful applicants will be available within a few days if hunters wish to check on their success or failure in the drawings. Hammons has no plans as yet lor the college, but he will ma;'or in either geology or physical geography where ever he goes. Lloyd, an end, is employed at the Burrill Lumber co. in the evenings and uses his time during the day to work out. His favorite pastimes are water sports with skindiving at the top of the list. Glinet To Linfiild Glines, from Central Point, is planning to get an educa tion at Linfield college this fall and will major in coach ing and athletic directing. Mike has kept in shape by running about three miles each day, by playing second base on the American Legion baseball team and by work ing at the McMinnville Ply wood company. These athletes were chosen to the All-Star team for their outstanding football records throughout high school. They will join the 23 other play ers on the combined teams for practice on the Portland State campus. The association now heads into its final week of the reg ular schedule. Two makeup games are bill ed for Monday. Tru-Mix Con crete and Colvin vie at 7 p.m. in the replay of a tussle which was halted by darkness with the score tied 1-all. John Wheeler and SO Dry Kiln meet in the second mix. This second fracas is actually "play ahead" rather than "makeup" for it was original ly set for Aug. 8. United drew the first blood in the Major league mix on Friday. Bob Quinney wham med the ball over left field for a home run. Dry Kiln markers also were on a home run. The round ripper by Eddie Paxlon in the sixth frame followed a sin gle by Dick Kuschel. Two Hits Each Kuschel had two hits for Dry Kiln and Quinney and Duke Anderson each two for UG. Anderson doubled. Ku schel tossed a five - hitter for the Kilnmen with two walks and one strikeout. Blair An tonucci, on the slab for the Grocers, allowed four hits and two bases on balls. He struck out nine. DK shortstop Dick Deffley turned in some great fielding play. Troy Reynolds knocked three of Colvins 10 hits and Bill York and Larry Johnson each two. Jim Tackett tossed a two-hitter for the victors. He yielded no bases on balls and whiffed nine. Gordon Car rigan, for CWA, gave up eight walks and fanned nine. Carrigan and Dick Webber each had three hits of CWA's 14 in a Thursday 14 to 2 win over Keith Schulz garaRC, and Larry Rutter and Jim Singler each two. Officials expect a field of more than fifty older mod el stock cars in the race around the one - fourth mile dirt track. This is the first race of the season in which the driv ers will be in contention for cash awards and this is ex pected to upgrade the tempo of the races from previous meets. The track will be faster than it has been in previous races and improvements made last week should increase the speed of the cars. A new track record is expected dur ing today's time trials. Krieger and Mattison each had 31-35 and three birdies and a bogie. It was the Oregon huskies' eighth straight triumph by one-sided scores after they fought to a 4-4 draw at this same auditorium in their debut, July 15, against a pick ed Kanlo team. The Yanks will aim to retain lone second place as the Giants have chance lo tie for it. Last night Rogue Valley faced Roseburg in the losers' Hunter Permit Applications Due in August Portland - Oregon hunters are reminded that applica tions for unit permits for the hunting of antlerless deer and for several early season hunts are due at the game commis sion's Portland office no later than 5 p.m., Aug. 5. Applica tions received after that date will not be eligible for the drawings. The drawing to de termine successful applicants will be held at 10 a.m. on August 14. Hunters are urged to check the regulations carefully be fore filing applications to be certain the choice is the one they want. The game commis sion also reminded hunters that two early buck seasons, the High Cascades and the Waldport-Mapleton area, re quire a permit if hunters are to participate. Hunters who file applications for these two hunts will not be allowed to file for any other unit permit. To be eligible to hunt during the early deer season in the Minam Pack area of the Wall owas, hunters will be re quired to have a Minam unit permit. Workshop For Keglers Approach of the 1963-1964 bowling season here is signed by the annual workshop of the Medford Woman's Bowl ing association.
