I, 1863 'Bubble' Boat Travels Above Water Highway j Philadelphia-HJPD-Naval and commercial ships of the future may ''bubble" above the wa ter at jet-propelled speeds of 100 knots if a principle being tested here is successful. A nine-ton, 52-foot research test vehicle resembling an elongated speed boat has been built here. It rides on a "cap tured" air principle developed . by Allen Ford, a physicist at the Naval Air Development center (NADC) at nearby Johnsville, Pa. I Developers said the day j may come when the same theory can be applied to many i types of larger vessels, includ- j ing the largest troop trans ports, ocean liners and air- craft carriers. The theory of the Captured : Air Bubble (CAB) vessel in-, volves air trapped beneath the hull of the vessel which is : powered by a jet engine on the stern. The current research test ' vehicle has sideboards and movable back and front flip- pers extending into the water , which permits the hull to ride ! two or three feet above the water-pushed up by the "cap lured" air. Above Deck The jet engine is located above deck on the stern be tween two fins. Auxiliary power for docking and ma neuvering in basin areas is j provided by a conventional 110 horsepower marine en-j gine. j The test vehicle, known as I the XR-1, was built under the direction of Walter Simmons, j a project engineer at the i Naval Air Engineering center I at the Philadelphia Naval ! base. The XR-1, with a crew of four, made its first successful run on the Delaware River, j adjacent to the naval base, on May 24 and further trials are being conducted. : The top speed of the experi- I mental craft is approximately j 35 knots, which developers i said was enuivalcnt to ap- i . proximately 250 horsepower in a conventional marine pro pulsion system. John Triem, program direc tor, said studies of the applica bility of the vessel would be made during the next six months, with the next devel opment step a 300-ton craft. Bus Lines Called j On Foreign Offer ! Washington . -aw- The In - terstale Commerce commis- . sion has moved to adjudicate , complaints from foreigners who said they were misled by bargain bus lour adver-: tisements. It told the Greyhound Bus Lines Wednesday to meet with other bus companies lo ar range joint rates and trans- ! fcr agreements for foreigners taking advantage of the "$99 j for 99 days plan." ! The plan allows foreigners to purchase a SU9 ticket good for transportation on the routes of member bus lines for 99 days between any two , cities in the country. Howcv- i er, Greyhound refused to ac- ccpl transfers if the foreign- ers bought from another com- J pany. ' j Foreign tourists had com plained thai as a result, they had been stranded or had to pay extra lo continue their trip. Fresh Vegetables Meeting Demands Washington - HPU - The Agriculture department said today summer supplies of fresh vegetables are moder ately smaller than those of last summer, but adequate to meet strong demand. If the supplies in Augdst and September are about in line with early indications, the department said, prices at the farm and across the re tail counter arc likely lo av erage moderately above those of a year ago. In a review of the vegeta ble situation, the department said more carrots and celery are expected to be available this summer than last, but smaller supplies are in pros pect for summer cabbage, let tuce, sweet corn, early sum mer potatoes, and onions. Supplies of cantaloups and watermelons are expected to be moderately smaller.
