(UPI) Medford Youth Repairs Damaged Manor Lawn Religion in America Many Saints Fail To Fit Image Held in Minds of Most People Br LOUIS CASSELS UPI Correspondent The word "saint" conjures up in most minds the image of a gentle, pious, unselfish per son to whom goodness comes as naturally as breathing. But the church calendar cnnlaiiS the names of many saints who just don't fit that stereotype. For example, Thursday, Julv 25 was the feast day of St. James the Great. The New Testament has milts a lot to sav about this fellow. And it depicts him as a yery ordinary human Deing, with a tendency to be vain, ambitious and hot-tempered. He was the son of a fisher man named Zebedee, who lived in the town of Caper naum, and operated a fleet of fishing boats on the Sea of Galilee. James had a brother named John and two close friends named Simon and Andrew, who wdfked with them in the fishing business. The monotony of their lives was broken one day by the arrival in Capernaum of a young itinerant preacher named Jesus of Nazareth. When Jesus talked about God, he sounded like he was speak ing from first-hand informa tion, rather than quoting out of a book. He was the most alive and compelling person The Family Council Editor's nnte: The ranitlr Council eoniHU of MU. The holes were discovered by Manor residents shortly after they were made, but no one knew who had made them. The petition contends cer tain legal requirements were not met in the sale and asks that the case be remanded to Deschutes County Circuit Court on the declaration that federal courts have no juris diction. Martin T. Byrne of Seattle bought the Bend landmark for $50,000 after he forced the sale to satisfy a California judgment against the owner, Frank William Corbett. The sale could have been confirmed 10 days after the auction by Federal Judge Wil liam G. She watched him turn the horse into a resi dence not too far from the Manor. The next day, she got in her car and drove by the resi dence, saw the same horse in a pasture, and got the name of the family from the mail box in front of the house. Back at the Manor, she turned her information over to Higgins, who called city police. The officers called on the boy and his parents, and the youth, shame-facedly, ad mitted what he had done. All of them consulted with Higgins about what should be done. Btrnard F.-It's just that no better set of rules is avail able. Albert S. I'm having a re union of my college house mates. It's been 10 years since the 23 of us who grad uated together joined up for an evening of camaraderie. But now comes Bernie with the only turndown. He says he can't come because the party is on a Friday night and he won't violate his Sab bath by riding. I thought after being out in the world he'd drop that provincialism and medievalism. Bernard F.-Many's the bull session Al and I have had on this topic and I see we're back where we were when I insisted on a vegetable plate instead of non-kosher roast beef at his wedding. I'll ad mit that I've searched my soul for alternatives to the religious life I've been used to, but I must cling to it. I'm not sure why, but I'm sure that if I dropped out I'd be lost because I can t find a substitute to guide me. e e The Council: Pertinent quotes rush to mind and we'll use two to glide into our answer. First, Thoreau would remind Al that Bernard "hears a different drummer." Then Brooks Atkinson, aware of how different and insist ent those drummers are warns "it is impossible to dis- pain to someone. So, Al, we'll be as painless as possi ble as we point out: In the strict dictionary sense, every one who leads a righteous life is religious, including you, for religion is "accept ance of and devotion to an ideal as a standard for one's life." Bernard accepts the code and way of life pre served by his family. You hear another "call" which polarizes your actions, guides, strengthens and comforts you. Is it art? Science? . . . Bravo to those bull. sessions. It's im portant to question. Even faith can not be taken "on faith." But Bernard finds among the "medievalism" bet ter signals for today's jour neys than any he could as semble by himself. who had ever come to Caper naum, and the four young fishermen were greatly at tracted to him. One day, Jesus walked down to the shore where the four fishermen were at work "Follow me," he said, "And I will make you become fish ers of men." Jame's and his three friends didn't hesitate. They didn't tell Jesus they'd need a little time to wind up their busi ness. They just dropped their nets and followed him. They were the first of the 12 Apostles. And they were destined to remain Jesus' closest friends and confi dantes. Jesus seems to have had a particular affection for Si mon, whom He renamed Pe ter, and for the two brothers, James and John. The New Testament records that He chose Peter, James and John to accompany him on several special occasions, includ i n g the last night in the Garden of Gethsemane, when He waited for His arrest and crucifixion. Didn't Change Immediately Close association with Jesus did not change James over night into a gentle and un selfish soul. Once, when the people of a Samaritan village gave Jesus a discourteous recep t i o n, James lost his temper and wanted to call down fire from heaven to wipe out the whole village. Jesus rebuked James se verely for this proposal, and reminded him that "The Son of Man came not to destroy men's lives but to save them." Later, to rub in the lesson with a little pointed humor, Jesus gave James a nickname: "Son of Thunder." On another occasion, James and his brother went to Jesus privately, and tried to extract a promise that tney would be given the top seats of honor -on his right hand and left hand-when He came to His throne. They were still think ing, as all of the. Apostles per sisted in doing despite Jesus' efforts to teach them other wise, that He had come as an earthly messiah or king. Again Jesus had to rebuke his friend, and as always, he used the occasion to teach a positive lesson "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority among them," Jesus said. "But it shall not be so among you. "Whoever would be Arvjht among you must be your ser vant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve . . . . " It took James a long time to understand what It meant' to be a disciple of Christ. Per haps he didn't really compre hend until he had the awe some experience of being a witness to the Resurrection. But when he finally did get the point, James followed his Lord all the way. hen the first persecution of the infant Christian church was launched in 44 A.D. by King Herod, James was arrest ed and beheaded. He was the first Apostle to die a martyi's death.
