Chicago - mm - More than a
haf million Americans wiM
be elevated te new heiahts
this year - via the nation's
eommersM airliners.
A survey compiled by Unit
ed Air Linos shewed that avov
half these novice air travelers
will be traveling ever rentes
they a n e e covered by car,
train or bue. A majority will
journey mere than 1,81 miles
from home.
Shorter travel time is the
prime object ef thpce-tourths
of the new flyers, according to
A. J. Beverett, market e
search manager for United.
'To illustrate, a family living
n Ohio or New York can
easily spend 12 or 14 vacation
days at a West Coast vaeatien
spot if they fly there ad
back," he said.
Half the first-time fflyera
will be vacation-lteund, the
survey indicated. Women ap
pear to be the most adventure
some in the survey results, m
60 per cent of those experi
menting with air travel will
be femafc.
Breaking down the differ
ent types taking first plane
trips this year, the survey
shows that 23 per cent will tfe
housewives, another 23 per
cent will be professional and
business people; 20 per cet
will be students, 10 per cent
will be secretaries and cleri
cal employees, and 5 par aaat
will be retired people.
The remainder will corns
from other walks of life, par
ticularly farming, Beverett
said.
Fitst-time flyers will find
they must cut down on lug
gage to 40 pounds, but they
can bring their pets in special
airplane kennels.
Of these people embarking
on air travel, 97 per cent
found their first trip satisfac
tory or most pleasant and 3
per cent indicated disappoint
ment, according to the United
survey.
