BOTH STRETCH With the San Francisco Giants leading in the eighth inning on their home diamond on Monday, Pittsburgh's Johnny Logan makes long stretch for first base after hitting to a shortstop. Giants' Baltimore 2-1 With Last Inning By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sporls Writer Notice how those American league managers always are crying about lousy pitching? Notice, too, how they're not saying one single word today? They couldn't possibly, be cause they wouldn't have a leg to stand on after one look at Monday night's box scores. For example: -Robin Roberts and Mickey Lolich tangled in a pair of two-hitters until Dick Brown hit a pinch two-run homer with two out in the ninth for a 2-1 Baltimore victory over Detroit. -Joel Horlen hurled hitless ball for 8Mi innings, then wound up losing a two-hitter when Don Lock's two-run homer with two out in the ninth brought Washington a 2-1 win over Chicago. Foff Busts 93 Straight Bill Poff earned a 75 straight pin Sunday in 16-yard trapshooting at Medford Gun club. He went 93 straight before missing one target in trying for 100 in a row. Breaking 25 straight at 16 yards Sunday was Mike Drake. Those shattering 24 of 25 were Loyd Langston, Keith Rowland, Howard My ers, Ray Wyatt, Byron Backes, Charles Bendel, Paul Culbert son, Jess Rowland, Dick Mc Donald and Henry Nieder meyer. In handicap gunning Ray Coleman brought down 25 in a row from 21 yards. Bust ing 24 were Langston, Floyd Young. Don Peterson and Niedermeyer. Skeet shooting saw Don Hawk splatter 24 of 25. Peter son broke 24 and Poff 22. Next competition at the Medford club is planned for Sunday, Aug. 11. Some mem bers from the local club are expected to attend a shoot at Klamath Falls on Aur. 4. The Giants won their eighth straight victory by downing the Pi rates 5-4. (UP1) Takes Out Dean Chance of Los An geles held Cleveland hitless until the seventh and settled for a two-hit 11-0 victory. Radatz Shines Again Dick Radatz came up with another one of his brilliant relief jobs to nail down a 7-5 triumph for Boston over Min nesota and Dave Wickersham of Kansas City pitched his first major league shutout to stop the Yankees, 5-0, in the other AL games. Roberts' two - hit victory over the Tigers was the 253rd of his major league career and his ninth of'the year for the Orioles. Lolich had a one hitter and a 1-0 lead until pinch hitter Al Smith singled with one out in the ninth. The Detroit rookie then got Luis Aparicio on a fly ball but Brown came off the bench to deliver a two-run homer that dealt Lolich his sixth set back in 10 decisions. Heart-Breaking Loss Horlen's loss to the Sen ators was equally heart-breaking. Recalled from the minors last week, the White Sox righthander held Washington hitless until Chuck Hinton singled over second base with one out in the ninth. Larry Osborne grounded out for the second out but Lock then drilled his 17th homer into the left field bull pen. Lock's homer made a win ner of knuckleballer Ronnie Kline, who relieved starter Steve Ridzik in the eighth. The only Cleveland hits off Chance were Fred Whitfield's bloop single in the seventh No Sandblower Games Friday There will be no games this Friday in the Medford Sand blower Baseball league. Felix Torres highlighted the Angels' outburst with a grandslam homer off Jerry Walker, who had relieved los er Dick Donovan. Chance struck out 12 batters and walked two in bringing his record to 10-10. Donovan now is 6-0. Monbouquette Wins 14th Bill Monbouquette register ed his 14th victory for the Red Sox although tagged for four homers by the Twins. Radatz came to Monbou quette's rescue in the eighth and struck out three of the six batters he faced. Loser Jim Perry ran into a five-run Boston rally in the first, marked by Dick Stuart's 22nd homer with two on and Ed Bressoud's 13th homer with the bases empty. Roman Mejias doubled home two more runs for the Red Sox in the third. Bob Allison hit his 23rd homer for the Twins, Earl Battey his 21st, Vic Pow er his sixth and Don Mincher his 10th before Radatz made his 44th appearance of the season. Wayne Causey's two - run homer in the first inning and Norm Siebern's three - run blow in the sixth settled mat ters between the A's and Yan kees. Both blows came off Al Downing, who went down to his third loss in nine deci sions. Until Friday, anyway. That's when Milwaukee's superlative 42-year-old south paw is due to work next and since he'll go against the Mets that night, he 11 probably dis pel any existing question. Actually there should be no question even now. To all in tents and purposes Spahn Indians Down Second Place Tacomans United Press International Even when the Spokane Indians are idle, they pick up ground in the Pacific Coast league chase. The Indians stretched their northern division load to 6'4 games when Portland edged second place Tacoma 3-2 in a sharp pitching duel between Monty Monteagudo of the Beavers and Ron Herbel of the Tacomans. In other action Monday night, Salt Lake edged San Diego 9-7 and Seattle picked up a 10-4 decision over Ha waii. Everybody else took a break, but all 10 teams are in action again tonight. Monteagudo helped his own cause at the plate in the con test at Portland. He singled in the third and came in on Billy Harrell'rf double and also knocked in a run in the fourth with an infield single. Harrell's homer in the sev enth put Portland ahead 3-0. MEDtORD. broke the strikeout record for left-handed pitchers by fan ning five batters in an 8-2 victory over Cincinnati Mon day night. Those five strikeouts upped his major league total to 2, 378. No argument there. But there is some argument over Rube Waddell's total. Record Books Differ Most record books say the former Philadelphia Ath letics' southpaw struck out 2.375 batters during his ca reer but in some books his total is listed at 2,381. 3-2 ton and Gil Garrido singled. A sacrifice fly, a double by Jesus Alou, and a single by Joe Sparks made it 3-2. The 19-year-old Monteagu do, now 9-10, increased his loop-leading strikeout total with 10 more. Herbel is now 12-10 for the Giants. Salt I.alco ilirlrr Pall Koonce was staked to leads of 7-2 and 9-4 by his heavy hitting mates and needed those runs when San Diego's Jim Saul whacked a three run homer in the ninth. Fred Burdette, one of the league's sharpest relievers, came in to preserve the win. Jesse White, Bob Will, Billy Cowan and Mack Kuykcndall all belted two hits apiece for the winners, while San Diego's Rogelio Alvarez also hit a homer for the losers. Seattle roared off to a five run lead in the first inning and then coasted in as Pete Smith and Hal Kolstad com bined on a five-hitter. Mel Nelson sirrrendcrcd most of the Seattle runs and absorb ed the defeat. Dave Hall and Russ Gib son each knocked home two runs in the big first inning. Feller was acknowl edged to have broken the record even though Waddell was credited with 349 strike outs for the 1904 season in some books and 343 in others. Those six strikeouts by j Waddell are the same ones under question now even though it was all supposed to have been settled in 1946.
