SPORTS Twins Downed Leading New 5-1 By League York Yankees By United Press International Ralph Terry paced himself perfectly in 97-degree heat, pitching his way out of an early jam and leading the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins Saturday with the aid of home runs by Joe Pepitone and Tom Tresh. Terry did not walk a single batter and struck out six on the way to his 11th victory against 10 defeats. The Yankee righthander al lowed only seven hits and blanked the Twins until the ninth when Harmon Kille brew led off with his 23rd homer. Terry's only other anxious moments came in the first inning when Ziola Ver salles opened with a double and moved to third on Johnny Goryl's single, but the Yankee pitcher prevented the next three batters from getting the ball out of the infield. The Yankees, who have now won eight of their last nine games, crammed all their scoring into the first three innings off Bill Plcis. They scored a run in the first inning on singles by Tony Kubek and Bobby Rich' ardson, along with Tresh's sac PORTABLE LIGHT PLANT FOR THAT SUMMER HOME Used, Delce, gas driven, 32 volt portable plant with 16 heavy duty gl batteries with seme appliances and light bulbs included- Priced at only $95.00. Osuna and Palafox, the Wi. ibledon doubles cham pions, used superb volleying tactics and accurate service. Palafox's serves proved espec ially too tough for Faquier to handle. Osuna aced Carpenter on match point with a blastering straight overhand serve which nearly knocked the racquet from the Canadian's grasp. After the match, Carpenter blamed the loss on the ex ceptional teamwork of the Mexicans and their "powerful volleying and return of our serves. "I've never experienced having my serve knocked back so hard so often," he added. San Francisco - HJPD - The guys with the flimsy wands are starting to hit again and that was a key reason why the San Francisco Giants had a five game winning streak going after Friday night's game. J i m Davenport, a .246 swisher at game time smashed a two run homer in the sec ond inning Friday and then Chuck Hiller-a .192 batter- followed with another two run homer in the ninth that scut- 6-4. "When you're batting .192 you aren't exactly wearing anybody out," Hiller said af terward while shrugging off his game-winning clout. Orlando Cepeda opened the ninth with a pinch single off relief artist Elroy Face. Then with one down, Hiller lofted his second homer of the cam paign toward the right field fence. Roberto Clemete fell prone after bouncing off the barrier and Cepeda, fearing caught, stopped running after passing second base. So did Hiller. Then Manager Alvin Dark came out of the shadows to wave them home. Jack Fisher, who has low ered his earned run average in relief to 0.29-weathered a bases loaded jam in the ninth to notch his fifth win In 12 decisions. Face's mark stands at 2-6. Alston was particularly irk ed by the inability of the Los Angeles hurlcrs to retire Ru ben Amaro, the eighth place hitter, and Chris Short, the pitcher. Amaro scored three times in the 6-5 Philadelphia win after singling once and walk ing twice.
