S 6 THURSDAY. JULY 25. 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Mobile Substation Maintained Here A massive mobile substa tion, equipped to roll along highways at high speeds for use throughout Pacific Power & Light company's southern Oregon and northern Califor nia system, has been deliver ed to the company and Is ready for its job of maintain ing electric service to custo mers. Frank Bash, Copco division manager, explained the unit will be stationed at Medford st the approximate center of the Copco division operations west of the Cascades. "All of our customers are going to benefit from the availability of this useful piece of equipment, because it will make it possible to maintain power service at times when our customers miaht otherwise have been in convenienced," Bash stated this week. The equipment Is described ss one of three such units Pa cific Power now has located strateeically throughout i t s Oregon, W a s h I n g ton and . northern California service areas for use in emergencies when a substation is knocked out of service or when need ed to take over the substation ' function while routine main tenance work is in progress. Mounted on a semi-trailer, the $72,000 mobiles substation consists of a large-capacity transformer that can handle ' 69,000 and 120,000 volt cir cuits, plus all of the auxiliary terminal and Insulating equip ment required for the job of reducing high voltage "juice" to lower voltage for distribu tion to customers. It was specially designed to comply with highway ve hicle weight limitations. 1 . f Man and Space Space Agency Plans Manned Station To Carry Astronauts ...., ,,. . . j i taaa I (om nf h itvrnatinn mav hp I Rut the sear By LEON DANIEL - Cap Caneveral - lUPl) - The federal space agency is de signing a space station that could carry 30 men and stay in orbit up to five years. According to first drawings the station would resemble a huge doughnut with three spokes joined to an inside hub. Astronauts would use the hub to land their space ships and to board again for the return trip back down to earth. , Nuclear Rocket The nuclear rocket is con sidered the next major step in space propulsion, but it is a step the United States is hav ing trouble taking. It now looks as though America's first nuclear-powered rocket won't fly until 1968 or later. The reason is that serious troubles have de veloped in a prototype pro gram called Rover. The Rover series presently is testing several engines at a proving center in Nevada bcientlsts had hoped to use the knowledge to build a nuc lear rocket by 1967. But new engineering problems and dif ficulties in finding the right materials are threatening to delay the problem a year or more. Telemetry System A new 85-foot telemetry system has been put in opera tion on the Atlantic missile range which starts at Cape Canaveral, The big dish is at Palm Bay, Fla. - just south of the missile firing center. A sim ilar antenna will be installed on one of the down-range is lands soon. The highly advanced sys tem will be used to track the latest missiles fired into the Atlantic ocean from Cape Canaveral FESTIVAL DIRECTOR Angus L. Bowmcr, producing direc tor of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, chatted with Dr. Leota Willis, Seattle, of the University of Washington, during opening night festivities in Ashland last evening. The lesti val's 23rd season will be the longest on record, continuing until Sept. 7. (Dwaine Smith photo) Oregon Jobless Figure Mounts Salem - IUP0 - The current highest unemployment in the lumber labor dispute has state with 10.3 per cent TICKING NOISE Great Bend, Kan. - (UPn -The passengers and crew aboard a Central Airlines plane got jittery Wednesday when they heard a ticking noise emanating from a suit case on a luggage rack. One of the passengers - a young man not identified - sheep ishly claimed the suitcase, opened it and turned off his electric toothbrush. T r ', Yf tj " i 5 J ' boosted unemployment in Or egon above the figure a year ago, the state department of employment said Wednesday. However, Commissioner Da vid H. Cameron said the fig ure is less than it was four weeks ago. The rate of insured unem ploymcnt in the state was set st 3.8 per cent for the week ending July 18. That is 13 per cent above a year ago but 1.3 per cent below the June fig ure. The lumber dispute has been felt most at North Bend, Eugene and Klamath Falls. In North Bend there are now 3,200 persons directly in volved and another 300 who are indirectly affected, Cam eron said. The city has the Baker has the lowest rate of 1.6 per cent. Corvallis has a 1.9 per cent rate. Rates In other Oregon cities include Eugene, 6.2 per cent; Klamath Falls, 8.3; Medford, 3.9; Pendleton and Milton- Freewater, 2.5; Portland 2.7 and Salem 3.1. Hatfield recently hung the first marker on a tractor in Salem to remind residents of Farm Safety Week July 21 to 27. The United States will try to launch its revolutionary Centaur space rocket from Cape Canaveral sometime this summer probably in Aug ust. The Centaur uses high energy hydrogen fuel, the pro pcllant that will be the key in American efforts to land me non the moon this decade But the first launching of the new rocket last May failed, and the program has run into troubles. The second flight will be an up-and-down attempt. Its main aim will be to ignite the hydrogen-fueled second stage Solid Propellent Missile The Department of Defense Is looking for a solid-propel-lant anti-missile missile that will take off up to 100 times faster than more conventional solid-fueled rockets. United Technology Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., will study the problem under a six month contract. Such a boost er rocket would generate, enough thrust to send a pay load several miles up in less than one second. System of Hibernation Some scientists think a sys tem of hibernation may be best for astronauts making long trips into space. One such proposal is that the spacemen be put in a state of suspended animation. This would involve bringing down the body temperature and slowing all other life pro cesses such as heartbeat and brain activity. Experts say that in such a condition an astronaut would be able to take the stresses of space flight - including radia tion exposure - much better. The problem is that a drug to do the job has yet to be found. But the search for it is under way In U.S. laboratories. When novelist Jules Verne wrote more than a century ago about a voyage to the moon, he proposed using a cannon to provide the power. American scientists recent ly used a 16-inch cannon to blast a 475-pound capsule of weather instruments 15 miles into the atmosphere. The ex periment was conducted in the West Indies. But scientists are not con sidering cannon propulsion for manned flights into space. The jolt would be too stiff. rTTTvm 77ii mtat .al I I I 1 iM lil r rA I ' f w f aw jar - r w ' w m a i i i i B 6 SAWOS UEVXYtEPJWAfEr LIMITED QUANTITIES! SHOP EARLY!
