WCA Review by CAB Requested
Salem - (UPD - Two state
agencies have asked the Civ
il Aeronautics board to re
view Its order which would
have eliminated West Coast
Airlines service in Salem,
Lakeview and Bums.
The petition to the CAB
was sent by Public Utility
Suspects Held
Hagerman, Idaho fUPB
Deputy Sheriff Vern Royse
planned to question two sus
pects at Burley today about
the roadside robbery - mur
der of a Portland, Ore., man
near here Monday night.
Tuesday, Royse ordered re
lease of two suspects picked
up at Boise. He said he was
convinced they were not con
nected with the crime.
Meantime, officers awaited
arrlvel in Gooding of George
Owen, Portland, believed to
be foreman of the victim. Of
ficers tentatively have ident
ified the dead man as Richard
A. Herald, 31, Portland, but
were awaiting Owen's arriv
al to make positive identifi
cation. The victim was found Mon
day evening in a pickup at
a roadside park about 2Vi
miles south of here on U.S.
Highway 30. An autopsy dis
closed he had been shot twice
in the head with a .22 or .25
caliber weapon. The murder
weapon was not found.
Royse said he believed rob
bery was the motive for the
crime. Officers found $11 In
the man's clothing but his
wallet wrs missing.
Five Small Fires
Doused in Oregon
Snlcm-flJPD-Flve small fires
In Oregon forests were quick
ly brought under control
Tuesday, the Slate Forestry
Department reported today
All were man-caused and
the largest was confined to
half an acre.
Three were In the South
east Oregon district, where
one was caused by a smoker
and another by a train.
A careless smoker caused
one Central Oregon district
fire and the cause of one in
the Northwest has not been
identified.
Neither the U. S. Forsat
Service nor the Bureau of
Land Management In Portland
reported any major fires In
the state this morning.
Commissioner Jonel C. Hill
and the State Board of Aero
nautics. The CAB order on West
Coast's operations was sched
uled to go into effect next
week, but the petitions from
the state agencies and sever
al Oregon cities will delay
its implementation.
The petition filed by the state
agencies argues that the air
line has never instituted a
usable commuter service be
tween Ontario, Baker, Pen
dleton nd Portland.
It points out the order does
not direct the airline to In
stitute service between Boise,
Idaho, and Portland with
Burns, Bend and Salem as
Intermediate points.
It also questions the CAB's
policy and discretion In reo
ommendlns the deletion of
Lakeview as a service point
in light of inferior Lakeview-
Portland service that has been
offered and lack of service to
Reno, Nev.
