A lone highway patrolman arrested the two suspects min utes later thanks to quick thinking by the victims's son and a suspicion citizen. The police department iden tified the slain officer as Eu gene Edgar McKnight, 38, a 16-year veteran on the force. Summer Storm Lashes Alabama; Tornadoes Strike By United Press International A severe summer storm lashed Alabama early today with hail, heavy rain and sharp lightning. The Birmingham, Ala., weather bureau radar was knocked out of service by the lightning. A large tree was blown onto a two-story apart ment building at Bessemer, Ala., 15 miles southwest of Birmingham. The worst of Ihe thunder storms were in north-central Alabama. Trees were uproot ed and power lines were down with one inch hail re ported in the southeast sec- lions of Huntsville, Ala. Huntsville got 1.09 inches of rain in six hours, and Charleston, S.C., received .85 inches. Two rare heat-caused torna does struck Port Arthur, Tex., on the Gulf Coast Tuesday night. One hit an old yacht club and sank one boat. The other turned over a trailer. Damage was placed at $7,000, Hailstorms slapped Georgia Tuesday afternoon. One-inch stones fell near Atlanta. A tornado cloud was sight ed in the Missouri river bot toms north of Jefferson City, Mo., earlier Tuesday during high winds and heavy rains. Debris Cleared Residents of Midland, Pa., cleared debris from a flash flood which sent up to seven feet of water surging inrougn homes and business places early Tuesday. For the 24 hours ending Tuesday night, Detroit, Mich., got 1.17 inches, Pittsburgh, Pa., .69 inches, Chicago, .42 inches, Little Rock, Ark., .40 inches, and Seattle, Wash., .41 inches. (UPI) Off-Duty Police Officer Slain in Sacramento Holdup Sacramento-IUIMi - An off- He was shot in the back of me nem in me penning iui of the supermarket. The suspects were identified as James Leslie Turner, 30, and Harry Schader, 28, both prison parolees from Oakland, Calif. Police said they admit ted the shooting. Police officials said Mc Knight, in plain clothes, was standing behind Turner in the checkout line at the market when Turner ordered the checker to empty the till of almost $1,000. McKnight followed the two men out of the store, grabbed Schader around the neck with his left arm and covered Turner with his service re volver, which he held in his right hand. Police said Schader wrench ed loose, knocked McKnight down and shot him. The two suspects jumped into , a car and sped off. ' . , . McKnight's son, Terry, 19, witnessed the shooting and took the license number of the car. Moments later, a su spicuous householder reported to police that two men had has tily parked one car near his home and sped off in a red car parked in the lot of an other market a few blocks away. Highway patrolman Jack Morris spotted the red car on U. S. Highway 40 north of Sacramento and gave chase. The suspects stopped and sur rendered to Morris without resistance.
