Swenson who, being a psy chologist, gives emphasis to the psyche. "We are well sensitized to problems of our soma by the time of maturity," he went on. "The annual physical exami nation and the physical quali fications required for most employment, together with the stereotype of the 'red blooded American boy,' all point to the fact that Ameri can society is well-grounded in accepting good physical condition as one of the major assets or perhaps as the major asset of life. So when Americans age they find it easy to take out their psychic (emotional and mental) difficulties on their soma. They can admit to phys ical (somatic) difficulties but they've had no training and no experience in recognizing and accepting those which rise from fears and tensions. ' Behind Eight Ball To complicate American ag ing further, Americans put themselves behind a psycho logical eight-ball by placing such high values on youthful ideas, youthful heroes, youth f u 1 accomplishments and youth in general. "Naturally this attitude gen erates a somewhat negative feeling toward older people, with the consequence that they are psychologically re moved from the stream of progress and quickly pass out of the picture as contributors to our society," Swenson con tinued. Another contributing factor to ungraceful American aging wends us way tnrough me (UPI) is that "we are developing a society that drowns out the basic philosophy of individual contributions and subordi nates it to a philosophy of the greatest good for the greatest number. "This concept seems to have its greatest impact on the old er individual. He has become a relatively insignificant part of this great group or team, and he has lost thereby the unique aspect of his person ality and the psychological satisfaction that goes with it. He also blamed "American science, in its mad dash for achievement." Behaviorial sci ence, he said, Is "almost com pletely losing sight of the whole, unified man." It has done so by "dissecting man into smaller and smaller parts." This dissecting has estab lished "arbitrary cut-off points." When a person be comes 40, "he is regarded as no longer able to begin a new job." When he reaches 65 "we assume certain qualitative changes take place and that the person is no longer the same person he was the day before." Major Segment Swenson is a member of the scientific staff of the Mayo Clinic and Foundation, Roch ester, Minn. He was advising physicians on how to deal psy chologically with aging Amer icans in the technical journal, "Postgraduate Medicine." As everyone knows, they now form a major segment of the population. By 1980 approxi mately one half of it will be 55 or older. His key recommendation was a reminder that "nothing is more important to the hu man personality than self-esteem. It should be remember ed that people grow old with themselves and with things. Spencer Tracy Said Considerably Better Los Angeles - IUP1I - Actor Spencer Tracy, 62, was re ported "considerably better" and "feeling fine" today at St. Vincent's hospital where he is undergoing treatment for lung congestion. The veteran silver - haired actor collapsed outside the rented Malibu Beach home of actress Katharine Hep burn Sunday as they prepared to go on a picnic. Tracy was taken to the hospital in a pri vate ambulance. The actor's physician said Monday he suffered from "a little congestion in the lungs that bothered his heart." Miss Hepburn first thought Tracy suffered a heart attack. But the physician said the Academy Award winner had a sudden attack of pulmonary edema. The physician, Dr. Karl Lewis, said he did not plan to issue any further medical bulletins unless there was a "major change" in Tracy's condition. He would not say when the actor would be re leased from the hospital. Grange News Griffin Creek Grange A polluck dinner will pre cede the next meeting of the Griffin Creek Grange to be held Thursday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Grange hall. The home economic com mittee announced that more sales slips are needed. The Fountain family was introduced and entertainment was provided by the two Fountain sons who play the accordion. Refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bicrma and Winn Arnold. selves or some of their things from them is to take away a part of their individuality. To remove all the small psycho logical peculiarities that exist in the older individual is clearly a threat to his inde pendence, and he will react accordingly." he Chicago river with the ackground. (UPI) MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. McNamara's Order On Demonstrations Draws Challenge By AL KUETTNER UPI Correspondent An order by Defense Sec retary Robert McNamara that uniformed troops must not participate in racial demon strations has been sharply challenged by integration or ganizations. Caught up in the contro versey is the little town of Havelock which lies outside the main entrance gate to the Cherry Point Marine Air Sta tion in the flatlands of eastern North Carolina. Racial groups have leveled discrimination charges against the "public accommodations" of the town which derives much of its income from the 2.600 men of Cherry Point, 600 of whom are Negroes. Floyd McKissick, a Dur ham, N. C, lawyer who Is na tional executive director of the Congress of Racial Equal ity and an attorney for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peo ple, announced that McNa mara will be asked this week to declare Havelock off lim its to Marines unless the Arlene Francis Sued Over Crash New York -01P1I- The hus band of a woman killed in the collision of his auto with one driven by Arlene Francis has filed a $1 million damage suit against the stage and tele vision actress. Joseph A. Arcos, 34, charg ed in the suit filed Monday in Slate Supreme Court that Miss Francis was driving in "a careless and reckless man ner" and was "exceeding the speed limit" in the accident May 26 on a Long Island high way. The auto driven by Miss Francis jumped a center di vider on the highway and crashed into Arcos' auto, which he was driving. H i s wife, Rose, 34, was killed. In jured were Miss Francis and two passengers in Arcos' car. Clubs, Cafet Segregated He said he based his infor mation that at least 17 night clubs and cafes and three the aters in the town were segre gated on reports from a Mar ine who had just transferred home from duty in Japan. A spokesman at Cherry Point, home of the 2nd Mar ine Air Wing, said the base would adhere strictly to a July 16 directive by McNa mara and that "we will very definitely discourage partici pation in demonstrations." In that directive, the de fense secretary said that mil itary personnel "may not un der any circumstances" par ticipate in racial demonstra tions during duty hours, while they were in uniform, while o n military reservations, when their participation breaks a civilian law or when violence is reasonably likely to result from a demonstra tion in which they were par ticipating. Not Direct Order McNamara did not express ly forbid off duty service men not in uniform from get ting into a racial incident but they also could be affected in the event of trouble and ar rest. The presence of a small number of Negro servicemen among racial demonstrators recently brough demands that McNamara issue a servicewide policy directive on the sub ject.
