Chrysler, which reported a 78 per cent jump In car sales for the first third of July, rose more than a point in a firm motor section. Steels also were firm, Eastman Kodak rose almost a point in the chemicals but Du Pont shaved a large fraction. Marathon shed more than 1 in the oils. Stop-Goldwater Attempt Seen by Other Hopefuls Washington - IUPD - The camp of Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Anz.) today viewed Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller's attack on the "radical right" as no tice that Rockefeller is a presi dential candidate. The New York governor's statement also was considered in some quarters as the fore runner of a stop Goldwater movement by other presiden tial hopefuls in the Republican party. A spokesman for Goldwater Monday night quoted the Ari zona conservative as saying the Rockefeller state m e n t amounted to the governor's "formal declaration of candi dacy" for the GOP nomina tion. " Although Goldwater has never acknowledged that he is a presidential aspirant him self, his stock has boomed in recent months following Rockefeller's re-marriage to a divorced woman. Political observers specu lated that Rockefeller felt he was losing ground in the presidential race and sought to regain leadership by his attack on groups supporting Goldwater. - Newsweek magazine said Monday the Rockefeller state ment was part of a concerted drive to block Goidwater's nomination by forming a co alition of Republicans sup porting the New York gover nor, Michigan Gov. George R o m n e y and Pennsylvania Gov. 'William Scranton. In a statement in Albany Sunday, Rock efeller lashed out at the "radical right luna tic branch" and said the Re publican party was in "real danger of subversion" by that group. He underscored that state ment Monday night when he expressed fears that Goldwa ter will become a "captive candidate of the GOP s ex treme wing. Rockefeller, whose remarks obviously were directed some vocal backers of Gold- water, is expected to renew the attack at the governors' conference In Miami Beach next week. Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R-N.Y.), a Rockefeller sup porter, followed-up the gov ernor s latest attack by calling on Goldwater Monday to re pudiate the John Birch So ciety and "crackpot" elements backing him. Keating commended Rocke feller tor his Sunday state ment. He said Rockefeller had spoken out against "know nothing, do-nothing elements attempting to take over the party." Reaction from other Repub licans was mixed. Many were careful to stay on the side lines, but Senate GOP Whip Thomas H. Kuchcl (Calif.) said Rockefeller had "performed a splendid service for his coun try and for his party." Khrushchev has been acting oddly in recent days for a man who once banged his shoe at the West and professed eternal friend ship for Communist China. He has snubbed a Chinese delegation here for ideological talks, and just as openly wel comed a Western delegation here to discuss a nuclear test ban treaty. The Chinese, nominally Rus sia's allies, are subjected to bitter attacks as racists, war mongers, and rivals for world Communist leadership. The United States and Britain,. who are on the opposite side in the cold war, are greeted with jokes and handclasps. I he contrast is so obvious that many diplomats here are. asking if Khrushchev is plan ning to seek peace with the West at the expense of Com munist China. Points Out Indications' Diplomats who thought this might be the case pointed to tnese indications: Khrushchev refused the Chinese even the normal courtesy of greeting a top del egation from a "fraternal Communist party." When they arrived earlier this month, Khrushchev did not go to the airport and immed iately left for Kiev, where he met with visiting Belgian For eign Minister Paul-Henri Spaak and Hungarian Pre mier Janos Kadar. Since returning here, he has studiously avoided the Chinese, apparently to make his original snub more obvi ous.
