Madrid - (UPD - Stretched cross the western end of the blue Mediterranean like tanned bull's hide is Spain, country with some of the tall' est buildings and one of the lowest standards of living in Europe. It has more reliance on agriculture than nearly anv other European country. Althoueh 8.8 million tour lsts-more than one tourist for every three Spaniards-visited Ihe country last year, span remains for much of the West ern world a land of mystery and paradox, Sharing the Iberian penin ula with Its small sister na tion of Portugal, Spain his torically is set apart from other European nations by the formidable Pyrenees mouiv tains which form about one- third of the country s nortn. em frontier with France. The only other land border Spain has Is the one it shares with Portugal. The Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea form the remaining bound' aries. Included In Territory In addition to the mainland Spanish territory includes the balmy Balearic islands oi me Mediterranean, one of .u rope's most popular tourist areas, and the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa (once known as the "fortunate islands" because of their mild climate), the Span Jsh portion of the Sahara Desert. Bnd other smaller pos sessions in north and west central Africa. With its area of 194,368 square miles, Spain is slightly larger than the state or call' fornia, and in many ways its Keography is similar. Both California and Spain have predominantly mild climates, large mountainous and aria or semi-arid areas, long sea coasts, resonably good fishing banks and a scattering of fer tile valleys peculiarly suited to fruit growing, vegetable farming and wine-producing. Spain's population total of SO.430,698, spread out over an area only slightly smaller than that of France (which has roughly SO per cent more population), leaves tha Span ish countryside with many wildly beautiful open spaces. No Racial Difference There are almost no clear cut Tacial differences in the Spanish population: The peo ple of this country are a mix ture ot descendants of stone-1 age Iberians, Celts, Phoeni cians, Greeks, Romans, Ary ans and Arabs. The only peo ples who preserve some de gree of racial individuality are the Gypsies, who general ly marry other Gypsies, and the tall burly Basques of northern Spain. The nation's economy, his torically based on agriculture, Is beginning to change now. Spain's principal exports are still agricultural products, al though the country earned more foreign currency last year through tourism than through Its traditional major exports ot citrus fruits and Olive oil. (UPI) erage productivity of the land most of Spam s rural popula. tion is extremely poor. Their per capita annual income is below the already low nation' al average of about $300. Yet 60 per cent of Spain's popula tion lives outside its cities. One reason for the low per centage of arable land in Spain is the mountainous na ture of the terrain. The aver age altitude is second in Eu, rope only to that of Switzer land. Although Spain's industry is growing rapidly, largely as result of government eco nomic planning and foreign id and investments, many manufactured goods are still in short supply, forcing the government to control im ports tightly in order to con serve needed foreign ex change currency. .The modern Spain is ex emplified by the Torre de Madrid, a 34-story skyscraper in the heart of Madrid. It is the tallest reinforced concrete structure on the continent. The still uncompleted Avilcs power dam on the Portuguese border will be Europe s big gest single electric power pro ducer. In contrast, however, to the beautiful modern buildings in the cities and the coastal reg ions, which are the only parts of Spain most tourists see, are the simple adobe houses in small villages in which most Spaniards dwell. There are at least five dis tinct languages spoken in Spain, plus many more dia lects. Nevertheless everyone understands the official lan guage, Castilian Spanish, which is taught in all the schools. Despite notable social and economic gains, particularly In the past five years, Spain still faces a serious threat to its future political and eco nomic stability.. Politically, Spain is an au tocratic state under the strong personal rule of Generalissi mo Francisco Franco, now 70 years old, who defeated the tottering Second Spanish He public 24 years ago in a mili tary revolt, and who has re mained very much in control ever since. . Request for Zone Change Is Approved by Medford Planners A request for a change of zone which will permit con struction of a service station at the corner of McAndrews and Biddle rds. was approved by a 5 to 2 vote at the Thurs day night meeting of the Medford planning commis The request was submitted by Ray Dahl, 787 Ellendale dr., who told the group thai two gasoline companies were interested in the 70 by 250- foot parcel of property. Dahl holds an option on the land Opposition to the request was voiced by Commissioner Wayne Struble, who said he was concerned about the dif ficulty of restricting commer cial zoning to the intersec tion area if the zone change were granted. He pointed out that there was a school with in 3 or 4 blocks and that there were a number of single fam ily residences nearby on Bid- die rd. Opposed to One Side "We have opposed rezonin to commercial on the west side of Biddle rd.," he said, we should be against it on the east side, too." It was pointed out, how ever, that in a Biddle Koacl policy statement drawn up last year, the McAndrews and Biddle rd. Intersection had been recommended for com mercial zoning, a"d that such zoning be limited to "that property lying within about 200 feet o the intersecting right-of-way lines." Struble was joined by Com mijision Chairman Elwood Hedberg in voting against the request, which will now go before the city council at its July 18 meeting for final ac tion. Other Agenda Items In other agenda items, the council voted to: Grant a change of zone from multiple-family to com mercial lor property located on the west side of Franquette st. north of Earhart st. Deny a request for a variance to setback require ments in single-family zones to permit construction of a patio cover at 1401 Johnson st. Approve a request for a change of zone from single family to single and two-family for property located at 1925 Crcstbrook rd. Grant a request for a change of zone from single family to multiple-family for property located at 1036 and 1048 Crater Lake ave. Approve a request for a change of zone from indus trial to limited commercial for a triangle of property ly ing between the old Biddle rd. and the realigned Biddle rd. near the Interstate 0 inter change. Grant approval of a re quest to operate a subdivision office as a home occupation at 1925 Crestbrook rd. Grant final approval of Blossom Hill Terrace, Unit No. 3. Delay for one month ac tion on a request for tentative approval of Garfield Park subdivision. Grant tentative approval of Rogue Terrace Unit No. 2, subdivision to five stipula tions suggested by the plan ning staff. Final Approval Granted Grant final approval of Siskiyou Village Unit No. 2, subject to a stipulation sug gested by the planning staff. Set Aug. 8 as the date for public hearings on re quests for a change of zone from single-family to multiple-family for property lo cated at the southwest corner of Crater Lake ave. and Mc Andrews rd.', and a change of zone from single-family and multiple -family to limited commercial for various prop erties located on both sides of Barnett rd. between Bear creek and Ellendale dr. All seven commission mem bers were present at the three hour meeting, which was pre sided over by Hedberg. The next regular meeting of the group is Aug. 8. Nine Flu Cases Reported in County Communicable diseases in Jackson county seem to be taking a vacation since only a few cases were reported for the week ending July 12. Nine cases of flu were re ported. Phoenix had three, Medford six and Central Point five. Other cases reported, ac cording to Dr. A. Erin Mnrkel, Jackson county public health officer, we'e nn p? The VW doesn't need a long front hood be cause the engine's in back of tHe car. This gives you a couple of advantages over the long-nosed jobs. Obviously, it makes for a shorter cor. So you can move in and out of traffic. And in ond out of tight tittle parking spots; Your chances of denting a fender in the process ore practically nil, too. Because the VWs short hood lets you look right down your nose at the rood. The point is this: Everything on the VW t$ thers for a reason. Including our changes. Unless you've nosed Ground VWs for years, you may not be aware of things like our fully synchromesh transmission. Or our quieter, more powerful engine. Or our 3,012 other inside improvements. -On the face of it, the VW looks the samei underneath, it's changed. . Which is one reason the VW depreciates so little and stays in style year after year.
