(UPI) . the Medical Roundup "Hand.Sehullar-Christlan'i Disease ' " I-' -, Ordinarily,. I am reluctant "to;descrlbe in this column 'diseases so rare that I have never i .llvar.i seen a case'. But through- the years I have disclover e d that because this column is seenby so many Ipeople, scores of them are always anxlioua to j .'learn .about some tare disease j ';tht thejrjiave, or perhaps a loved one has; Often when I ideicrlbe a rare disease, many persons write to say, that at ilprjl last they . know, what Is : wrong with them and they are ; comforted: They say: '."What ,you describe is exactly what I . Jhave.? Then they will want to ' know 'where to find a doctor 'who knows enough about the (disease to cure It. , ! Obviously, no one can have an: extensive experience' with , Ja' very rare disease unless he works in some huge medical ; Institution, like the great gov.-, jernment research , hospitals In VBcthesda, Md or the Me tmorial hospital for cancer re (search in New York City, a (great university clinic, a clinic like iMayo's at Roche s t e r, Mtnn. the' Cleveland Clinic, ittha Lahey Clinic (In Boston), the Scott-White . At a meeting of the commit- Jtee, Turner pointed out the (importance of the tourist trade I to Oregon and said that it Is Athe third largest Industry in Jthe slate. Turner later noted that-viators from out of state ;vspent more than $217,000,000 iiasi year. 'The Oregon Welcome com .'mlttee was formed In 1962 at . tthe suggestion of Governor I-Hatfleld. : ' June Job Placement Up Over Last Year . D. H. Paulson, D. S. Schuster, and E. M. Farber of Stanford University School of Medicine in California; They have combined . the ' Hand bchuller - Christian,, disease with the LeHerer-Siwe disease and some others which' seem to be related, and for this com bination they use the new term, Histiocytosis X. The X means that no "one knows what this puzzling and mfiny- symotomed disease la due to. iv can oe acme- and' wiciqiy scattered over the body,.' or chronic, and slowly progres sive, or it can be benign' apd localized, and more or .less Harmless.' : Not Haradlta,rT'; '".,'.. ' I The disease appears not to be .hereditary.: It can appear in children. Often there, is: a large liver and large -spleen with 'localized tumors In the Bones; Also fever, anemia, a low white blood countand a painless enlargement of the lymph nodes In the neck, the armpits, and the groins ac company this disease.- Other complications Include, the skin, bulging eyeballs, diabe tes insipidus with a great thirst, the passage- of enor- nious amounts of . urine, bronze pigmentation of parts of the skin, blood clots under the skin, and yellow flecks on the skin. . ; Often "In . these .mivylino- casea the diagnosis "can be made by performing what is called a biopsy on one of the nodules on the skin. A little piece of affected skin is snip- pea on, sectioned, stained, and examined under a micro scope. The treatment Inrlurinx exposure to x-rays, 'or to the electron beam from a linear accelerator, or the giving of a Powerful druir ratled nllrnDen mustard, or of antibiotics and the cortlco-sterolds, which are related to cortisone. Gail To Get Tax Refund on Property R. C. Gall, proprietor of of Gall s Market, Gold Hill, was promised full tax refund of (199 for a non-existent tax lot in property he had pur chased about I960.. County Judge Earl M. Miller said Gail had not re ceived the partial refund earlier authorized by the county court- because the court's order had been mis directed to the .wrong depart ment. Gail said tax lots 26 and 27 overlapped the property on which his store is located. A circuit court order earlier had corrected the overlap, he ex plained. The previous owner of lot 27 had declared that tax lot 2fl did exist, but Gail said he had proved through: sur veying that it did not. About three billion tons of land material are dumped Into the world's oceans every year by rivers, winds and other natural agencies. 2 Onlr 13 ac J" ' : GRANADA CHINA Service for ( Rtf. 2.I 88 .Now f21 J Only l ac Sets ' :.'
