OBITUARIES HOWARD J. HOOPER Funeral services for How ard J. Hooper, who died July 5 In Portland, were held Tues day, July 9, in the conserva tory chapel of A. J. Rose and Son, Portland, with interment in the Sunset Hills Memorial park, Portland. Mr. Hooper had been a frequent visitor at the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wil lard McCullough, Medford, parents of Mrs. Clinton Ayres. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Hill esland, Portland, Mrs. Ger aldine Ray, Vallejo, Calif., five grandchildren, and a niece, Mrs. Clinton Ayres, Eagle Point. Those who wish may con tribute to the Medical Re search foundation University of Oregon medical school or the Eagles lodge. CHARLES F. NICHOLS Funeral services for Charles F. Nichols, 93, of 1216 Locust ave., Medford, who died at his home Tuesday evening, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Perl Funeral home. Joe Brown of Carlton, Ore., will officiate. Interment at Siskiyou Memorial park will be private. Mr. Nichols was born Oct. 8, 1869, in Van Buren county, Illinois. He moved to Medford from Illinois and has lived here for the past 82 years. Until his retirement, he was employed by the T. R. Florey company. On July 15, 1894, in Med ford, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Pool who preceded him in death Dec. 8, 1957. Survivors include two sons, Otto F. Nichols, Medford, Carl E. Nichols, Medford; two daughters, Mrs. Robert E. Harnish, Eagle Point, Mrs. Edith M. Updike, Medford; one sister, Mrs. Grover Cook, Medford; s i x grandchildren and nine great grandchilden. CLARICE MOE Mrs. Clarice Moe, 78, of 11200 Mira Mar ave., Medford, died in a local hospital Tues day evening. Funeral arrange ments will be announced by Perl Funeral home. JOSEPH E. BARTLEY Funeral services for Joseph Ernest Bartley, 44, of 3478 New Ray rd.. Central Point, who died Sunday, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Hill crest Memorial Chapel on the North Phoenix rd. Mr. Bartley was born March 18, 1919, in Corcoran, Calif., and had lived in south ern Oregon since 1956, being employed as a cook at the Veterans A d m i n i s tration Domiciliary at White City. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Coxswain in the U.S. Navy from Nov. 10, 1937, to April 28, 1944. Mr. Young was born Oct. 30, 1891, in Holcomb, W. Va., and had lived in Medford for the past six years. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. A. F. Beutel, Medford; a brother, A. R. Young, Libby, Mont.; and a nephew, Guy Roberts, Grants Pass. PETER CHASH Peter Chash, 73, died Tues day at the Veterans Adminis tration Domiciliary, White City. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the VA Domiciliary chapel. Chap lain Lawrence Eskay will of ficiate. Committal will be in the VA cemetery at Eagle Point, with Ashland Mortu ary in charge of arrange ments. Mr. Chash was born July 13, 1889, in Poland. He was a veteran of World War I, serv ing from Aug. 8, 1917, to May 14, 1919, as a private, -Company G, 361st infantry, 94th vision. MRS. E. Ashland City Band Concert Scheduled Ashland - The Ashland city band will present a program of popular numbers at the Thursday evening concert in Lithia park. Included will be an audi ence favorite featuring Dave Wight, Raoul Maddox and James Maffett in a Dixieland Jazz trio, A Grundman Civil War Fantasy, "The Blue and the Gray," and excerpts from the Sound of Music, as well as a Sousa march, "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine," and overture "Luslspiel" by Keler-Belah are announced for the 7:30 p.m. band concert directed by Dr. Herbert Cecil. Temperatures from the Mid dle Atlantic states through Tennessee into Arkansas were 10 to 15 degrees lower this morning than Tuesday morn ing. Readings in the 50s also prevailed from the Great Lakes region to the North At lantic states. The temperatures fell to 54 in New York Tues day, the coolest July 9 ever recorded. The 46 at Windsor Locks, Conn., was a 54-year low for the date. The mercury tumbled to 33 at both Bradford and Empor ium, Pa. Winds clocked at 60 to 70 miles per hour accompanied by heavy rains blew a tree onto a house near Winter ville, Ga. The storm dumped 3.80 inches of rain on Charles ton, S.C., in 24 hours. The warm 80s and 90s cov ered the nation from the southern plains to the far Southwest early today. Blythe, Calif., had a reading of 96 during the early morn ing hours. The temperature shot to 106 at Imperial, Calif., 105 at Presidio, Tex., and 101 at Las Vegas, Nev., Tuesday. It was in the 90s in such places as Amarillo, Tex., Little Rock, Ark., Miami Beach, Fla., Ok lahoma City, Okla., North Platte, Neb., Shreveport, La., Wichita, Kan., and Salt Lake City, Utah. Gary Hamilton Gets Grant to Michigan Ashland -Gary Hamilton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ham ilton, 390 Liberty St., has won a $2,800 grant for post grad uate study in theoretical" and applied social science at the University of Michigan. The award was made by the Na tional Institute of Mental Health.- i Hamilton was grad u a t e d this spring with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Ore gon. The photographer took this picture to finish out his roll at 2:22 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the assailant crept up to the girls from behind and smashed a bottle over the head of Lynn Perry, 15, of Areata (top, white suit), Inflicting seri ous head wounds. He then attempted to wrap Judy Fagundcs, 16, of Areata, in the striped blanket. After a long struggle the girls drove the man away. Police are conducting an intensive search for the assailant. (UPI) Three Citations Isued by Police Three citations were issued by Medford police Tuesday afternoon following three automobile accidents. Cited for failing to yield the right of way and for not having an operator's license In his possession was Sylphy C- Casey, 41, of 1517 Oregon ave. His vehicle was involved In an accident at the corner of Plum and Dakota sts. at 5:30 p.m., according to Med' ford police. The other car was operated by Wallace Gerald Groleau, 42, of 1027 Murray st. Aaron Albert Riesland, 73 of 706 Towne st., Grants Pass, was cited for failing to yield the right of way after his vehicle was involved in an accident with one operat ed by Jerry Leander Stewart, 26, of 24 Chestnut st. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 62 and Biddle rd. about 7:25 p.m. No citations were issued following an accident at the intersection of Eighth and Grape sts. about 2:45 p.m- Operators of the vehicles in volved were Arthur Kenneth Clark, 35, of Fresno, Calif., and Lester Finlcy, 70, of 326 Oak Grove rd. Mullins, Don Nimrod and Gary Christlieb. Hubcaps Reported Taken in Medford Medford police were plagued with reports of thefts of complete sets of hubcaps from three automobile firms early Tuesday. Jay Allen company, 1078 Court St., reported the theft of four sets from cars parked on their lot. The sets were valued at $170. Four more sets were report ed taken from the Dick Knight company, 33 South Riverside ave., valued at $131, and Hamlin Motor company, Ninth st. and Central ave., notified police of the theft of one complete set. City police also investigat ed a report of broken windows at Hoover Grade school, 2323 Siskiyou blvd. Seven win dows, averaging six by four feet in size, were reported broken. They are valued at more than $200.
