The Family Council rmtor's note: The Family Council 'coniliU of a Judje, a phy. hJatnst, -three clereymen, tnree edltori ana a women s "'"' each arUcle u a mmirary of a family disagreement presented to tne Council The Council deals with problems, major and minor, encountered by cuidance counselors and social workers. Edited by Mrs. Ainu Denny. (Ciipyrifht by General Features Corp.) Mrs. N. D. I want to put our son on a drastic reducing diet. Mr. N. D. He's still a baby. Why annoy him so early in life? Mrs. N. D. I was heart broken last week at the way the kids on the beach laughed at my son. He's a plump jolly little fellow of 5, but he ran back for his bathrobe with tears in his eyes when he heard, "Fat, Fat the water rat," from children playing in the sand. It's true he's over weight, and I'd like to help him lose, but his dad doesn't agree, and keeps on filling him up with pizza and banana splits. Mr. N. D. - Worrying about your shape is a grown-up headache. Why bother Ronny's head with such nonsense? His mother just has to explain to him that it's a free country, that he has a right to be fat, and he need not listen to fresh kids who don't know how to play fair. Time enough to hand him skim milk, saccharin, and carrot sticks. I'll go along with it when it comes to fit ting him into a tuxedo some day. The Council: Mr. D. misses the point. Ronny is already being subjected to the strain of ridicule, a worse strain than that of no-whipped-cream. So it's no comfort to him to be told not to listen to the taunts and to keep on eating all the nice coconut custard pie be cause he's only a little boy. We don't agree with the idea of waiting until the teens to work on a child's physical at tractiveness. Every day of his life is important. Let him ga ther assurance from the ad miring, approving glances of others. Your little butterball, Mr. D., is collecting -small stabs instead, tiny hurts, which accumulate and eventu ally affect him emotionally. He's the one who doesn't get chosen for a part in the class play, for a place on the team. He's the Big Joke. Spare him that sort of conspicuousness. You'll thus enable him to stana out in happier ways. NOW OPEN ...
