8 A- MONDAY. JULY 1. 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOHD, OREGON Belgium Capital Is Blend of Ages By MURRAY 1. BROWN Brussels - fflPB - The Amer ican planning to visit Europe this year can get added divi dends by including this charming capital of Belgium on the itinerary. For Brussels offers a de lightful blend of the Europe of yesterday and of tomorrow. Ranking with Paris and other Capitals for years as a sym bol of sophisticated European living it now has gained add ed stature as the center of tho six-nation European Com mon market. Modern glass - sided sky scrapers are shooting up across this sprawling metrop olis of one million, casting their shadows on quaint three-and-four story houses built hundreds of years ago. Dome Shares Honors - The Palais of Justice (Its dome reminds the American of the U.S. Capitol building In Washington, D.C.), the dom inant landmark for about 100 years, now must share honors with the new 24-story Knott's Brussels .Westbury across town. , The Westbury is the tallest hotel on the continent and the first- American oper ated hostelry in Belgium. Autos, cabs, buses and trucks jam the streets and there is an air of prosperity about the well-stocked shops and stores, and smartly-clad men and women on the boule vards. But the 20th century has not taken over completely. Litttle "Toonervllle Trolley" street cars with clanging bells still trundle through the streets. And almost everyone still finds time during the day to sit down and relax at a street cafe. At least one cafe on the Place de Brouckere - Brus sels' Times square - provides overhead electric heaters for natrons on chilly days. Around the square, peddlers huwk boiled snails and French fried potatoes which they dump into cones made of newspapers'. Has Museums For the cultural minded, there are numerous museums. art galleries with the' finest In Flemish art, churches famed for their Gothic or Rcnnaissance architecture and many outstanding historical sites. For war buffs, a visit to Waterloo is a must. But the climax of anv vis. it must be the Grand' Place, one of the finest examples of medieval public squares In Europe. Once the main mar ket place, vendors still sell Ilowera in tho center of the square Dominating the square is me ouu-year-old Hotel de Vllle (City hall) with Its soaring tower. On .the street next fo the Hotel De Viile is a monument to one of Brussel's earliest heroes. A statue In a niche . on the wall depicts the body of Evcrard T'Serclacs, who led 70 patriots In a surprise assault on an occupying gar hison in the fourteenth cen tury and liberated Brussels. He was assassinated about 30 years later. Years after, the monument was erected and it has become tradition that rubbing the statue brings good luck and health. And certainly no one could come to Brussels without pay ing his respects to the famed statue of the little boy answer ing a call of nature. Known as "the oldest citizen of Brus sels," the original statue was sculpted In the early 1600s. Since then, the little b.onze ' has led a hectic "life" - It has been captured by invad ing armies and stolen time and again. But each time he has been returned to his pedestal at the fountain In the Rue de L'Etuve at the corner of the Rue du Chene, not far from the Bourse in downtown Brus sels. For after-dark entertain ment, there are numerous the aters, music halls,- movies. night clubs and fine restau rants. ...... American and other inter- Holiday Traffic Deaths Estimated Chlcago-OIPD - Within four days the bloody slaughter of the Fourth of July week end begins and the National Safe ty Council estimates that 550 to 650 persons will be killed In traffic accidents. The 102-hour holiday week end begins at 6 p.m. local time July 3 and ends at mid night July 7. "With the Fourth of July historically more dangerous," Safety Council President ' Howard Pyle said, "it calls for etxra caution by all of us to hold the number of fa talities to the lower side of the estimate." ' He noted the Memorial Dav week end toll of 523 killed last month set a record for 102-hour holiday period. The previous high for a 102-hour Independence Day holiday period was In 1961 when 509 persons were killed in traffic arid 415 lost their lives in other types of acci dents. . r national airlines service Brus sels regularly. Then, after colonizing the satellite, they will have a sol id base from which to dig raw materials, build "balloon" houses underground, and be gin exploration of the reaches of space. These predictions were bor in the solar system, the made by Dr. Bernard I. Spin rad, director of Arjonne Na tional Laboratory's Reactor Engineering division. Why colonize the moon first? "The moon is an appropri ate halfway house between the earth and further explor ation," he said. "First, as our nearest neigh- moon is a relatively easy shot. "Second, it is a good rendez vous target." Spinrad said another im portant advantage is that raw materials from the moon could be used by space explorers to make many of the components of future space ships - thus- avoiding much of the . cost of earth launchings. He said establishment of a moon, base might resemble a squad of foot soldiers digging into a new position. "Approximately 10 feet of lunar rock will provide essen tially the same protec 1 1 o n against radiation that we have on earth by means of our atmosphere," he said, so the spacemen would each dig ' themselves a hole. The next step, he said, would be to build an under ground room lined , with a plastic "balloon." Other "balloon" rooms un derground would include fa cilities for a miniature "Noah's Ark" to provide a variety of food and a water supply, he said. Spinrad said' the colony would need shop equipment perhaps 10 tons of it. "Finally we need a power plant," he said. "I assume a nuclear reactor which is ca pable of turning out a mega watt of power." "All these processes are within our grasp . . ." he said, "I believe that this sort of enterprise would have an enormous total payoff in terms of our ability to exploit our early success on the moon quickly and move on from there." Spinrad spoke at a sym posium on "Nuclear Aspects of Space Studies" at the Uni- GEARHART DOCTOR DIES Portland - (UPD - Dr. Charles C. The ceremony is performed on an average of every 19 1 2 seconds through the year. The total number of persons wed Uiis year will be about 3.2 million. And despite the concern over the rising divorce raic, the bulk of them will stay married. Census figures show that 85 per cent of the Amer icans who have been married have had only one spouse. VALVOLINE 100 TABLETS 1 persons remarry within fiver years. Thus, most American mar riages endure, happily or oth erwisi. The h-piness oer. centage has been a subject of dcoElc aown through the centuries. , Author J. P. Marquand said marriage is "damnably seri ous business, particularly around Boston." Essayist Michel De Mon taigne likened marriage to a "cage," Shakespeare to a "curse," and Cervantes to a "noose." Popular it is. In the United States nine of every 10 per sons marry before the age oj 32. The average age for mar riage is around 20 for women and 22 for men - somewhat too soon according to many authorities. The most popu lar age for marriage among women is 23 and among men 26-27. If you are an unmarried woman between tho ages of 22 and 24 there is one chanco in five you will marry before the year ends. If you are an unmarried male between tho ages of 25 and 28 there . i better than one chance in six you will marry within the next 12 months. But If you are a bachelor aged 30 there are less than three chances in four you will ever marry. A 30-vear-oltl spinster has only sliehtlv more than one chance in two of ever marrying. An unmar ried woman who is 40 has only one chance In five of finding a husband, but an un married man the same aga uaa a one in inrce chance. 'Two Party System An American Medical asso ciation writer. Dr. Stanley R. Dean, described n-.arriaga as prooaoiy me lirst two-par- iy aysiem 01 government ever devised." An ideal partner In this two - party system. Dr. James H. Peterson, University of Southern California sociolo gist and marriage counselor said, is "a oerson who mrpta one's emotional needs, wits within the boundary of one's tempermental pattern, who is physically attractive, and who ' maintains Interests that aro stimulating - one who has a well developed sense of val ues on which one can depend, and one who has fairly sim ilar cultural-reference groups (a sociological term moaning similar background)." As for what makes mar riages go wrong, Peterson warned: "As the age of the individ ual goes down from 21, the divorce rate goes up. Tha lower the age, the higher tho rate of failure. "The higher the education-' al level, the lower the rata of divorce," he adds. "Tha more schooling the fewer tho problems."
