Studs Split With Mock Ford, Play Medford at White City Grants Pass - Grants Pass Mock Ford took firmer hold on third place in the South ern division of Area 4 Ameri can Legion junior baseball here yesterday by defeating the Central Point Cheney Studs 7 to 4 in the opener of a doubleheader. Central Point won the non counting second game 6 to 1. A first inning onslaught turned the trick for the Fords in the league game. They surged for six runs. Don Sum mers and Pete Hardin each singled in two runs. Bill Standley and Bob Peters also got hits. There were two bases on balls, a passed ball a groundout and the Studs' only error of the fray. Larry Mason chucked a one-hitter for the Studs in the second tilt. - Central Point Cheney Studs will host the Medford Ameri can Legion junior baseball team in an S o'clock non league game at Memorial field. There have been a number of extra inning conflicts and the outcome is considered a toss up when the two clubs take the fieid. Medford won the previous tray this season 3 to 0. It drew the top crowd of the season for Legion ball in this vi cinity. Grants Pass is now 5-2 in the standings and Central Point holds fourth spot with 4-4. Twedell Triples The Cheney's picked up two of their runs in the second inning of yesterday's opener on an error, Dave Twedell's triple and Howard Tomlin son's sacrifice flyout. The other two came in the second inning on hits by Luis Al varez, Darryl Summerfield and Ncal Ellis, an error and a stolen base. Ellis and Summerfield each had two safeties and Sum merfield drove in three runs. Steve Newman got the only hit off Mason, an infield blow. Mason fanned seven and walked one. There were no women s singles on today's program. Ken Rosewall Defeats Laver Forest Hills, N.Y. - iUPD -Ken Rosewall is making a ca reer of beating fellow Austra lian Rod Laver. The tiny king of the courts needed only 68 minutc3 to conquer Laver, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, Sunday in the final of the na tional pro tennis champion ships before an estimated 5, 000 at historic Forest Hills stadium. Rosewall has earned al most $50,000 in whipping La yer 32 times in 41 matches since Rod turned pro last Jan uary. His latest victory net ted him $1,400 while Laver took the runner-up purse of $1,100. The Colts, National league rivals agreed that it's too hot to play on Sunday afternoons, but they never anticipated the cold treatment they'd get in the cool of the Texas eve ning. The Colts inaugurated Sun day night ball in the majors June 9 with a 3-0 victory over the San Francisco Gi ants. They made it two in a row Sunday night with a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals giving them a perfect 2-0 mark and a string of 18 consecutive scoreless innings in Sunday night com petition. Hal Brown, a 38-year-old righthander who hasn't won another game all season, scor ed both the Sunday night vic tories pitching 6'4 innings in relief of Dick Farrell on June 9 and going the distance this time with a seven-hitler. The Colts scored the game's only run in the fourth inning when Howie Goss doubled and and tallied on John Batemnn's single. Lew Burdette, ex-Mil waukee ace, yielded nine hits in six innings and suffered his seventh -loss against sev en victories. Braves Blank1 Dodgers The Milwaukee Braves whip ped the Los Angeles Dodgers. 7-0, the San Francisco Giants topped the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3-, the Philadelphia Phillies nipped the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, and the Pittsburgh Pirates de feated the New York Mets, 3 0, in the other National league games. Tony Cloninger pitched a two-hitter and Hank Aaron hit his 22nd homer of the season for the Braves, who dealt rookie Nick WiUhite his second loss. Roy McMillan also homered for the Eravcs Cloninger retired 17 batters in order after a first-inning single by Jim Gilliam, didn't walk a batter and faced only 28 men during the game. He stands 4-4 for the season. T . a . s ret. .873 .7.10 .300 , 4 S a .333 .222 .111 Trl-city Ashland 1 Medford American Legion junior baseballers moved into the lead alone in Area 4 s Southern division yesterday by t h u m p I n g the Tri-Clty Gems 1S to 2 at Merrill Then the Medfords made a doubleheader sweep of it by slipping by the Gems 3 to 2 in a non-league scuffle. Medford whammed 12 hits in the main attraction while strong-armed Big Bill Enyart limited the Gems to two. A pair of five-run stanzas, the fourth and. the fifth made the big scoring difference in the game. The Medford's had five bases on balls and eight TC errors -with which to work. The league game gave Med ford a half-game lead over the Klamath Falls Falcons, who had a bye date, and pre served a single game gap over Klamath Falls Mock Ford. Faces Studs Tonight Medford goes to White City, tonight to be guest of the Cen tral Point Cheney Studs. Game time will be 8 p.m. This will be a non-leaguer. The Medforos have won the only previous tussle between the two this season. A Sun day story inadvertently listed the game for a different field. Mike Neathamer had two triples and a single for Med ford while Jim Calhoun doubled and tripled and Dan Miles and Tom Barker each had two safe blows in the first game. Singles by Neathamer and Barker were the only hits for Medford in the fourth inning when three errors and a base on balls helped runners tour the bases. In the fifth inning Calhoun slapped his double and Ron Edmonds,' Don An derson and Miles clouted sin gles. There were two errors nd a hit batter. Only one hit by Jay Parish, his first of the Legion season, contributed to the two-run Tri-City third inning. Two Medford miscues were put with it. Enyart did not walk a bat ter and he registered eight strikeouts. TC chucker Dave Hill whiffed two. A base on balls and singles by Calhoun and Ken Phipps accounted for a Medford run in the first inning of the sec ond scrap. Jack Mullen drove In the tying run in the fifth inning and Neathamer the knot-breaker on singles. The first game figured in the Area 4 Southern division standings and gave the Ash landers a 1-8 status in the loop. Klamath's Hawks are in fifth place now with 3-6. Ashland in the loop affair overcame a two-run deficit with a single tally in the fourth Inning and three mark ers in the fifth. The Lithians used Dennis KendeM's infield hit and two errors for the first score. In the fifth Jan Susce, Tim Voth and John Rhodes all got hits. Ross Coldwell laid down a bunt to squeeze Voth home for the go-ahead run. There was no possible play on Voth and the putout throw was made ' to first base. Rhodes took advantage to also score.
