MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON SUNDAY. JUNE 30. IMS Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS (Register and Tribune Syndic.!, ;) Little Difference Between A Hay Stack and Minnow The production of a pound of pork chops, beefsteak, fowl, fish, or nearly any other food, represents the previous con gumption of many pounds of different foods by the hog, cow, chicken, or fish that turned that food Into other food that we enjoy. The chicken you eat for dinner tonight, had to con sume grain, green vegetables, and various other commod ities in order to grow and attain a consumable size. All these animals belong to the food chain, all are important, and about everyone knows just what it takes to fatten a cow, or a pig, or a chicken. But the fish, a link in the food chain, poses a question. Much Tim and Effort The answer to that question would seem to be, how can we make something that looks like something the fish will go after? The fishermen, and those that try to help the fisherman, have spent much time and effort shaping, de signing, and coloring various objects to attract a fish. These objects, colored as vividly as a rainbow, have been hopefully cast into lily pads, behind half submerged logs, and in other likely places in hopes a big fish would rush out and grab it, in spite of the gang of hooks that are attached. And strangely enough, many fish do exactly that, and are sometimes hook ed. They strike sometimes, even when their stomachs are full of their natural food, and even when they are right in ildinq Permits Increase in City Building permits increased In Medford in May, 1963, com pared to May, 1962, the Uni versity of Oregon bureau of business research has report ed. In May, 1963, the total was $521,966, compared to $384, 399 in the same month last year. In Grants Pass the building permit total for May, 1963, was $536,550, compared to $87,600 in the same month last year. Building permits from 148 identical reporting centers in Oregon totaled $33,619,836 in May, 1963. This was 36 per cent higher than in May, 1962. The state total in May, 1963, included $18,600,366 for 1688 new dwelling units; $11,238,548 for non-residen tial construction; and $3,780,- 922 for additions, alterations, and repairs of existing structures. the midst of food with which they are acquainted. The fish the fisherman takes, if it is of keepable size, has eaten many times its own weight in natural food; to be more specific, other and smaller fish, and one of these important Ush food-fishes, is the so-called shiner. Usually the shiner is con sidered a non-food, or a non- game fish, but its importance. although mostly overlooked, is tremendous. These small fish are the equivalent of grass the cow eats to produce beefsteak. Many thousands of little fish quietly sacrifice their lives to fatten the big fish, with little recognition given them for the part they play in the all important food chain. One of the biggest families of little fish is the minnow family, comprising the shin ers, which are recognized as bait fish. The carp, too, is a member of this family, and just to show how inconsistent this group Is, a carD may weigh several pounds. But or dinarily we lefer to the shin ers as minnows, or the other way around. This group m eludes many species. There is a golden shiner that grows pretty large. Goldies vary in color from silver to gold, ac cording to their age and the type of water they inhabit. The shiners are shiny, with large scales that rub off easily and are smooth to the touch, If the golden shiner escapes his hungry enemies long enough he may reach a length of 12 inches. Many iipecies of shiners are true vegetable eaters, and for that purpose are equipped with a long and very efficient digestive system that is suited to the utilization of algae, and other aquatic plant life. The value of the little fish, even in fresh water lakes, cannot be accurately measured, but it is very great. Every bass that brings a glow of pride to the fisherman that catches it, had to con sume thousands of those little fish. To the bass, the shiner is the same as the tons of hay is to the beef cattle. It was a wise and provident nature that provided the shiner; the little fish that go to make the big fish. 6-29 "I see that educational toy 1 got in the Classified Ads has taught Junior who the bad guys are!"
