Ellen S.-VVhen an executive of 55 losses his job, it's a real catastrophe. When the ship ping company of which my husband was vice-president was absorbed by a big firm, he and a dozen others were let out. That was six months ago and we're forced to ac cept help from his brother. I wish he'd stop waiting for another vice-presidency and take the modest job he's been offered. Richard S.-That offer Ellen harps on is to sit at one of 100 desks and process mail orders. Aside from what it would do with what's left of my ego, we couldn't live on the pay about 25 per cent of my former salary. I'd still need help from my brother and he agrees that I should SHIP IT IflSPM to or from Oakland, San Fran cisco. Even though your brother doesn't mind helping out, he must realize that it's more blessed and easier to give than to receive. It's been doubly hard for you to be on the less blessed end, for obviously you've always been in command. We ven ture to say that be it ever so humble, the desk job will be your steppingstone to a "fea tured role" in industry again. once an executive, always an executive-type. While those around you go through their 9-to-5 motions, you'll see new Dossibilities. short-cuts, an gles to expedite the paper work, and before long you re bound to be a supervisor, with a decent boost in salary, Meanwhile, Ellen, if you can Dick ud a paycheck as a sales woman or receptionist, tlif davs of feeling beholden to your brother-in-law may end soon. Yes, it s tough to be out of work in middle age, but it's not hopeless. By lowering his sights and adjusting his budget, Richard can accept a humdrum post and transform it quietly into a satisfying challenge. Incidentally, there's a non-profit agency which for 24 years has been placing ex-executives like Richard. It's called "Forty Plus" and the New York City office is at 15 Park Row. NAMED COMMANDER Aberdeen, Wash.-4l'P-Ted Little, Clarkston, Wash., has been named commander of the Washington Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the organization's con vention here. Having submitted to the board of education my resig nation, effective prior to the beginning of the next school year, I would like to take this opportunity to report to the patrons of the school district I feel that important prog ress has been made during the past year in the develop ment of a strong educational program for the Butte Falls schools. Perhaps the most not able accomplishment has been the development of the six year high school, through the cooperation of the local board of education, the county school office and the state depart ment of education. This plan of organization will make possible the addi tion of several new courses to the high school curriculum Democrats Ponder Convention Site Washington-TOTO-Democratic national committeemen gath ered Monday to select a site for the party s 1964 conven tion, with Atlantic City the most likely choice. Chicago and San Francisco still were in the running, how ever. San Francisco already has won the Republican conven tion. The GOP National Com mittee announced Saturday the nominating conclave would open in the Cow Palace in San Francisco on July 13, 1964. The Democrats are expect ed to convene their conven tion much later, probably In mid-August, because P r e s I Kennedy is assured of nomi nation and they don't face the GOP problem of having . to build up a candidate. They have taken time to trav el at their own expense to observe programs being offer ed by other schools and to meet with county and state educators In an effort to solve the school district's problems. I have enjoyed working with the people of Butte Falls and appreciate the support which I have received. You have in Butte Falls a poten tially excellent school system. Your children are eager to learn and the teachers are ca pable and dedicated. However, the support of Gold Panning To Be Subject of Class Grants Pass-1 ne second oi two classes in the techniques of gold panning and the use of the gold pan as a prospect ing tool will be conducted here Thursday night by the Josephine County Sour doughs. The classes will be held at Sourdough gulch at the Jose phine County fairgrounds from 7 to 8 p.m. and will be open to the public, it was an nounced by co-chairmen Norm Peterson and Len Ramp, Grants Pass. Favorable areas for gold panning and prospecting will also be covered. every parent and patron la an absolute essential If quality education Is to be accomplish ed. It Is In the interest of securing this kind of unity j and support that I have, after careful consideration, deter mined to resign as district superintendent. I feel that the actions taken by the board of education have been taken after proper deliberation and that they have been In the best interest of the school district. Each of you has a responsi bility to secure for himself a thorough understanding of the educational program if you are going to participate in the formulation of school policies. Signing petitions and other acts designed to influence the operation of the district with out first securing a complete understanding of the total problem can only be detri mental to the schools. I encourage you to secure a competent administrator, re spect his judgment in educa tional matters, unite In sup port of the schools and give your children the quality ed ucation to which they are en titled.
