Hundreds of families were homeless. Scores of others were warned to be ready to leave some areas on an hour's notice. Two persons ' were dead. Damage was In the mil lions. Dcwitt, Neb., was under two feet of water early today, Memphis and Valparaiso, Neb., were surrounded by the surging flood waters. At Ashland, Neb., surging Salt creek ran 14.73 feet deep, nearly four feet above flood stage. A highway bridge north ot town started to crack and all dikes were reported broken. The Weather Bureau said water had not reached the town but flooded nearby low lands. Army amphibians res cued families, (our of whom had taken refuge In their attics. Poetry Contest Set By State Association Anyone interested in sub mitting poetry tor the 1963 Oregon State Poetry associa tion poetry contest if invited to become a member ot the Oregon State Poetry associa tion. Among requirements are that the entrant must submit three typewritten copies of the poem, the poem must be the original unpublished work of the gender, the en try must be postmarked not later than Sept. 15, and each person may enter only one poem in the contest. Cash prizes are being offer ed, with an additional prize to be awarded by the Verse weavers poetry society. Additional inquiries may be made to H. Forest Grove Music Group Returns Home Portland-flJPD-The first con tingent of the Forest Grove Gleemen and Girls arrived home Monday after a two week tour ot Europe. Director Bruce Kelly said the president ot the Salzburg, Austria, Music Festival had invited the group back again in 1968. The amateur singers performed twice at Salzburg, once In Rome and four times In Monaco. They were greeted Monday at Portland International air port by Rose Festival Queen Linda Jackson and members ot the Rainmakers and Repar ians.
