Hard To Km p From Smiting E 3 Philatelists Termed an Unusual Group Which Cherishes Tiny Flaws Br DICK WEST United Prut International Washington - (ITU - You don't have to smile when you call a man a philatelist, but sometimes it's hard to keep from it. Stamp collectors comprise one of the few roups on earth that cherish Imper fection. Even the smallest Km flaw in a post age stamp will send a phila telist Into spasms of delight. This passion for the defec tive seems a mite curious to those of us who regard the postage stamp merely as some thing to mail a letter with. Some of the controversies that shake the philatelic world - as, for example, the inverted printing of the Dag H a mmarskjold memorial stamp last fall - are likely to cause a non-philatelist to quiv er with amusement. Question of Eyebrows At the moment, it looks like a major flap is shaping op over the question of Amelia Earhart's eyebrows. A new airmail stamp honor ing the famed avlatrix, wl-o disappeared during a flight over the Pacific in 1937, re cently was unveiled by the Post Office department. . AO NO. SBD-2444A-5 COL X 200 UNES-NEWSPAPER5, JUNE, I? 63 I Bower, who engraved the stamp, neglected to equip Miss Earhart's likeness with eyebrows. When I heard about this, I stopped by the department to take a look at the sample and also to Inspect a photographic enlargement of the area around her eyes. Bower, who worked from an old photograph, pictured Miss Earhart boyishly attired in slacks and shirt and stand ing in front of the silver monoplane in which she dis appeared. No Commtnt To me, her brow seemed as barren of upholstery as that of the Mona Lisa. But when asked a department press officer whether Bower had in deed omitted her eyebrows, all I got was an enigmatic smile. ' The official policy of the postal service is to be as in scrutable as possible. I assume it seeks to avoid giving the stamp an Inflated value on the philatelic market, as might be the case if word got out that Bower had goofed. In addition to the contro versy over Miss Earhart's eye brows, there also has been considerable d I s cussion re garding her facial expression, which I would describe as a "grile," or a cross between a grin and a smile. She apparently was squint ing Into the sun when the original photograph was taken. Some philatelists siry the engraving presents an op tical illusion in which the eyes appear open one moment and closed the next. Commenting on that, the press officer said "at eight cents,:, an animated postage stamp might be regarded as one of the better buys of the year." Gloria H.-We've just moved to a larger home which has dining room instead of a breakfast nook, and a nice spread of lawn. It's ideal for n sweet-sixteen party for me, with lanterns strung up and dancing on the patio. Right in the middle of my planning, Dad informs me that he's ask ing a few family friends to come over that night, too. Mr, S. R. - We have a few relatives and friends who ex pect to be asked over to our new place. The grounds will never be as beautiful as now, full of June roses. It won't poll Gloria's party If we com bine It with a small house warming celebration - in fact the affair will be a sort of coming-out" for her, a chance to be the belle of the ball. The Councili Gloria's right, houscwarming tacked onto 16th-blrthday party wouldn't stay tacked on past the first hello's and the second round of highballs. It would take over, making Gloria as un comfortable as that dog who was wagged by his tall! Keep it Gloria s party, Mr. R.-the one she's envisioned (and Dromlsed her friends), where nobody must ' butter up any grownups, where teen ta I k may be rife, relaxed, and un translated. Typical adult party behavior can take much of the sweetness out of Gloria s sweet sixteen memories. . . . Find another occasion, Mr. R., for making good on promises to play host. The double over head for separate shindigs may hang neavy over your calculations, but you'll wind up wltn two gooa diowouu instead of the two-ln-one blur you propose. Remember, Sweet Sixteen is Gloria's box of candy and not your friends' dish of tea.
