I, If ; I! 1 I Social Events Women's Mews Students At Home For Vacation A number of itudenti from Medlord attending collegei and universities in the east have returned home for the cummer vacation. From Notre Dame are Doug las Snider, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Snider, who will enter his sophomore year In the fall; and Tom Tomjack, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A- Tomlack. who has completed his Junior year. The Snlders also have their son, John, home from the University of Oregon, where he will enter his Junior year in the School of Journalism in sepiemDer. Miss Karen Carpenter, dauahtmr of Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar Carpenter, Foothills road, hsi arrived home from Radcliffe college, Cambridge, Mass. The Carpenters met their daughter la San Fran- Cisco. The student plans to leave about July 1 for San Miguel, near Mexico City, Mexico, where the will study the Spanish language, and liter ature. John Shaw, who will be a senior at Northwestern uni versity when he returns to school, arrived home Satur day, accompanied by a fellow Btudcnt, John Tripp of Bronx- vllle,, N. Y., who is a guest at the Butte Falls home of John's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Shaw Sr. Robert Hamilton, son of Mrs. Moore Hamilton, arrived home Friday from Dartmouth college, where he also has completed his Junior year. Installation Ceremony Held by Soroptimists Ashland - Installation cere monies that emphasized the purpose and program of the Soroptlmlst club locally and Internationally were conduct ed June 14 In the Mark An tony hotel ballroom following a 7 o clock banquet, u was attended by more than 45 members and guests. Mrs. Helm! Leidigh, a past president, was the installing officer. She used the Sorop tlmlst lnsiginia as the theme, reminding each new club of ficer of her specific duties in carrying out the aims and ideals of Soroptimism, ever mindful of woman's response ble role in today's society. Receiving the presidential gavel for the ensuing year was Mrs. Louise Walters, who succeeds Mrs. Mabel Winston. Both spoke briefly and ex changed the official pins of the executive office. On the new board are Mrs. Alta Nichols, first vice presi dent; Mrs. Mary McLoughlin, second vice president; Mrs. Caroline Sharp, recording secretary; Mrs. Vina Kapetyn, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Marie Austin, treasurer and Mrs. Adelaide Clary, director. Simpsons Sing Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Simp son, who were introduced by Mrs. Velma Jones, presented program of Amercian folk music, vocal and guitar, in which they were joined by the audience for the singing of several familiar old songs. The installation dinner opened with the customary ritual of the Pledge of Al legiance followed by the Soroptlmlst grace which Mrs. Hattle Litwllled sang and at the conclusion of the evening all Joined hands in the Sorop timist Aloha. The tables were elaborately decorated in blue and gold flowers, golden oak leaves and acorns and lighted by tapers in Soroptimist club colors. Favors were the sym bolic gold leaves of the In signia on the large emblem between two tall baskets of daisies and delphinium. Mrs. Amanda Farris was chairman of the decorating committee, The club's next undertak ing is its annual Shake. spearean Festival project of the pillow and blanket rental booth during the ieaon. Pro ceeds go toward Festival scholarships for girls in the company. Fifty Plus Club To Meet Friday Members of the Medford Fifty Plus club whose birth days are in June will be hon ored at a meeting of the club Friday, June 21, at 12:30 p.m. in St. Mark's guild hall, cor ner of Fifth street and North Oakdale avenue. Members who attend are to take sack lunches. Cards, games, and dancing are plan ned with music to be provid ed by a local orchestra. Birthday cakes will be sup plied. , 4 Card Party The Get Together club will conduct a pinochle card party June 21 at 1 p.m., In the Girls Community club. The public is invited. A dessert lunch eon will be served. I (St Miss Linda Versteeg Reception Held At Gold Hill Gold Hill - A reception honoring students and their parents and faculty members of both Gold Hill schools was held In the Hanby school mul tipurpose room following eighth grade graduation ex CTcises June 4. Some ISO persons attend ed. Hostesses were mothers of eighth grade students, Mrs. R. M. O'Brian had charge of the decoration com mittee and Mrs. John Thom as was hospitality chairman. Mrs. Nathan Banry and Mrs. Byron Brown headed the dancing committee. A cake was presented the class by Mrs. William Ganong. Graduation caps and scrolls from the cake top were giv en to Mrs. Gilbert A. Mack, wife of the school's princi pal. Mrs. Leonard Kelt cut the cake. Serving were Mrs. Gan ong and Mrs. William Mad den. Mrs. D. T. Brown, Mrs. Vic tor Croxton and Mrs. Thom as presided at the punch bowl. Kerby Bethel Installations Are Conducted Illinois Valley - Miss Linda Versteeg was installed hon ored queen of Bethel 36, Inter national Order of Job s Daugh ters in ceremonies held re cently In Kerby school. The queen's theme was lilies of the valley and each of the olli cere carried a bouquet of lilies during the event. The line officers introduced their families. . The queen's brother, Charles Versteeg, pre sented her with the gavel. Past honored queen, M i s Kathy Basham, presented the queen her pin and traveling tiara. Officers gave an adden dum for Miss Basham and pre sented her flowers for a re membrance bouquet. The queen then gave Miss Basham a gift from the officers. Assisting in the installation of officers were Ron Good pasture, William Culbertson, Dwayne Madden, Terry Mo- Naught, George Blue, Rich ard Olsen, Galen Aller, and George Tythcott. The young men represented the Redwood chapter of the De Molay. PROSPECT-Gunderson .; FULLER PAINTS Garden Club District Instituted the new TopnvState district Montague Mrs. Warren Messner, director of the Cas cade district, California Car den Clubs, incorporated, was the guest speaker at the June meeting of the Shasta Valley Garden club of Moniague, held recently in the club room of the Montague auditorium. Mrs. Edward Clement, presi dent of the local club conduct ed the business session. Other special guests present were officers and district chairman of the newly form ed Top-o-State district, Mrs. Ray Kelley, director; Mrs. James Sullivan, correspond ing secretary; Mrs. Morris Prather, 'horticulture chair man; Mrs. Paul Decker, of Mt. Shasta, historian. Mrs. Clement is recording secre tary of the new district. In her message, Mrs. Mess ner explained the various functions and operations of a garden club district and how it coordinates its work with that of the state organization. She also stressed how each garden club, which forms the district, coordinates its func tions with that of the district She emphasized the impor tance of compiling a year book by each club, which out lines the year's activities and projects to be accomplished. Mrs. Messner then preesnt ed on behalf of ' California Garden Clubs, incorporated, a certificate of membership for to Mrs. Kelley, which was ac complished by a message of welcome to the new district. The first district meeting will be at Mt. Shasta park in August. The local club will hold an accredited flower show some time ln September. Mrs. Clement asked that for the July meeting, each member take a plant, bulb or shrub, for a plant sale among the members and guests pres ent. The meeting was closed with the serving of refresh ments by Mrs. Mable French, Mrs. Elizabeth Hesslg and Mrs. Frank Kouts. Calendar Thursday 8 p.m. - UNA lodge.
