Perkins Receives Diploma From FBI National Academy Lt. Lyle C. Perkins, head of the detective division of the Medford city police de ' partment, was graduated this week from the FBI National Academy in Washington, DC, according to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. Lt. Perkins was a member of a class of 86 specially se lected law enforcement offi cers from 36 states, the Dis trict of Columbia, the U.' S. Park service, the Marine Corps, the Air Force and 10 ioreign countries. It was the largest class ever to take the 12-weeks course. Addressing graduation ex ercises of the 71st session of the academy was Vice Presi dent Lyndon B. Johnson, Lyle C. Wilson, vice president of United Press International, and Lt. Forrest M. Dodge, di vision of police, Louisville, Ky., president of the graduat ing class. Diplomas were presented by Assistant Attorney General Herbert J. Miller Jr. Invoca tion and benediction was de livered by Dr. Edward L. R. EUon of the National Presby terian church, Washington, D. C. Previous graduates from the National Academy from this area include Medford Police Chief Charles P. Champlin and Paul Bettiol of the Jack son county sheriff's office. Academy graduates still active in law enforcement in Ore gon now number 31. with the graduation of Lieutenant Per kins. . John H. Williams said the rigorous schedule included a thorough study of all the latest techniques and develop ments in law enforcement and their practical application. The addition of this year's class of graduates increases the ranks of academy alumni to more than 4,300. Foreign countries represented by mem bers of this year's graduating class include Argentina, Can ada, Cyprus, Dominican Re public, El Salvador, Ireland. Liberia, Pakistan, Peru and Venezuela. ATJC and Save OLollVO Local Students to Compete in Event In Detroit June 23 Two Medford High school boys, Jon Inskeep and Chuck Smith, who won .the Oregon State Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest, will leave for Detroit - Sunday. In Detroit June 23, they will be among the 48 teams of teen-age automobile mecha nics students from all parts of the country competing for scholarships and prizes worth $9,000 in the 1963 National Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest. En route to -Detroit they will stop in Portland, where they will meet the teams from the other Pacific North western states and be feted by Portland Region Chrysler Plymouth officials at a vic tory banquet. At the Michigan State Fair grounds in Detroit, they will test their skill in finding and fixing mechanical problems concealed under the hoods of a line-up ' new cars. Will Win Titles First of the two-man teams to discover and repair the hidden "bugs" and restore their cars to perfect running order will win national titles in the Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest, sharing $9,000 in scholarships and other awards for their teams and schools. Automotive tech nicians will serve as contest officials under the supervi sion of Chief Judge Herbert E. Ellinger of Western Michl- gan University of Kalamazoo. The contest is sanctioned by the National Association of Secondary School Prin cipals, the American Voca tional Association, Inc., and the Office of Education of the Department of Health, Educa tion and Welfare. The boys will be accompa nied by . their instructor, Lloyd S. Lyda. This year was the second in a row that Med ford High school produced the Oregon state champions. Veterans Entitled To State Benefits Elmer W. Donahoo, Jack son county veteran's service officer, has announced that additional World War II vet erans and widows will be en titled to state and local bene fits as a result of passage of Senate Bill 411 by the legis lature. In effect, the new law ex tends the dates of military service for defining a World War I veteran under Oregon law, thus liberalizing entitle ment of the war veterans and widows to state property tax exemptions and house trailer license exemption. The change became effec tive May 1. A companion measure. Fla.-HPI-Fewer boat owners in Fort Lauderdale are waving fran tically and asking "Hey, Jack, which way is home?" Reason, the city is putting canal-name signs on its 140 canals. They are like the street-name signs used in less liquid towns.
