i i li MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON THURSDAY. JUNE 20. IMS B 3 'Monkey Shines' Backfire on Lab Animals By WALTER C. EVA Seattle - HIPS - A Univer sity of Washington research er is conducting "split-brain" surgery on monkeys and he hopes his research will an swer some questions which have battled scientists for cen turies. D r . Mitchell GUckstein says the split brain technique has the effect of endowing the monkey with two brains that can operate independently of eacn outer. By severing the corpus cal losum, a bundle of nerve fi bers which connect the two halves of the brain, GUckstein has found that each hand can be taught different be havior patterns. What one hand is able to do the other is unable. The implications for ad vancing the body of knowl edge about brain function are considerable. No Clear-Cut Function "Most of the brain has no clear - cut function that we know of," GUckstein said, "We know roughly that cer tain areas are responsible for motor function, and touch, visual and auditory sensations. "However, we know very little about how these areas rtmmunicate with each oth- ii for example, how the eye and the hand work to gether beautifully in mil lions of ways." GUckstein said the compari son of the brain to a network of telephone wires has proven to be of little value in understanding the brain's actual function. To study the coordination of the eye and the hand in the monkey, GUckstein sev ered another bundle of nerves the optic chiasm, which trans ports sight sensations from the eye to the opposite side of the brain. In this way, the picture that one eye sees will go to that side of the brain only. To Perforin Tricks ' With these two bundles of nerves bisected, GUckstein said, the animal will still be able to perform certain tricks which it had learned previ ously. But now, if the pre frontal areas of the brain are also removed, the monkey loses the ability to do these tasks, he added. Apparently, the monkey forgets how to perform the tricks, leading to the conclu sion that the prefrontal areas are somehow involved in the memory of experiences which require coordination of t h e hand and the eye, he said. GUckstein said if one pre frontal area is removed, the animal will be able to master the task provided the eye on the intact side if the brain is permitted to see how it is done, but not if that eye is covered.
