Lead Sled Dog
Gets Messages
Through Radio
Ketchum, Idaho - flJPD -The
operator of a small dog
kennel and pet store here
says he has the longest dog
sled team In the world.
It Is so long, in fact, that
Robert Black talks to his
lead dog through a battery'
operated radio system.
Black also boasts something
unique In the dog world
Mrs. Black combs his dog
team and turns the combings
into "sammy wool or a
odorless, angora like wool
that can be used to make
sweaters.
The dogs are known as Sa
moyeds, a strain Black says
has never been crossbred and
consequently are direct de
scendants from a breed of the
earliest dog known.
His 21 -dog team, averaging
about 43 pounds each
weight, can pull a load equa
to about three quarters of
a ton. He uses the 70 - foot
long team hauling passengers
from the nearby Sun Valley
parking lot to Dollar or Baldy
mountains.
Dollar is a small skiing
hump near by the resort's
parking lot, but big Baldy
is a number of miles away.
The Blacks came to Ket
chum last November iind op
erated the dog sled around
town. During a parade here
Black discovered the need for
the battery - operated radio
He said noise from the pa.
rade drowned his orders be
fore they reached the lead
dog.
Mrs. Black combs the dogs
in the spring when they are
shedding. The females arc
combed right after they wean
their pups.
She gathers the wool,
washes and spins it, then can
knit it or crochet it into what
ever articles ere desired. The
Items - and on of the most
popular are baby booties -
are sold In the Black s pet
shop.
The kennel has 20 Samoy-
cds, all registered with the
American Kennel club. There
are 64 dogs In all, including
Scotties and West Highland
Whites.
The 21-dog sled team was
featured last year In the Ap
ple blossom parade In Wash
ington and the Seattle, Wash.,
Grand Seafair parade.

Taxes on Cigarettes
About Half of Cost
Washington - (lPD - Nearly
half the cost of a package of
cigarettes goes for taxes, ac
cording to the Tobacco Insti
tute Incorporated.
If automobiles were taxed
at the same rate as cigarettes,
a new $3,000 car would cost
about $6,000, the Institute
said. The federal and state
governments together impose
taxes averaging 13 cents per
package, or four times as
much as the growers receive.

Traveler Goes
'Pioneer' Route
Daily to Office
Arcadia, Mo. - (ITD - Rob
ert Edgard is a pioneer of
sorts who wears a Homburg
hat and carries a briefcase
instead of a coon skin cap
and flintlock rifle. He rides
a communter train instead of
a Missouri mule.
For the past 14 years, Ed
gar has been living a com
muter's life on one upman
ship on the boy who had to
walk 10 miles to school
through the snow.
He spends 24 to 30 hours
a week commuting to his in
surance business in St. Louis
from this Ozark Mountains
community. It's a 176-mile
round trip by rail.
Edgar said he Wanted his
sons, Robert and James, to be
brought up in the community
where their great - grandfa
ther first settled In 1866 "so
his lion could go to the college
that was here.
"Arcadia is derived from
the Greek and it means 'a
scene of peace, quiet, simplici
ty and happiness.'." Edgar
said, describing another rea
son he goes through the
lengthy commuter routine.
Edgar maintained a winter
home in St. Louis and a sum
mer home nere unui mta,
when he decided to become a
full time resident "and I've
been commuting ever since."
Edgar boards the Texas
Eagle at 6:13 a.m. and arrives
In St. Louis at 7:40. The re
turn trip aboard the Eagle
begins at 5:40 p.m. and he
arrives here at 7:40.
He said the routine is more
relaxing than living in the
suburbs and driving like mad
down the freeway so you can
get home five minutes earli
er. "I do some work on the
train," Edgard said, but he
indicated most of his time
was spent in contemplating
the mountain scenery.
Home is on a 27-acre, wood
ed tract in the Arcadia Val
ley. Nine of these acres are
lawn, the insurance man said.

Farmingdale, N. Y. - (ITD -
Republic Aviation has been
