OREGON Student Leaves for Summer in Turkey HARLOW HEAD To Work in Istanbul Harlow Head, 1959 grad uate of Medlord High school who received a bachelor of science degree in business ad' ministration at the Unlvor eity of Oregon Sunday, leaves today for Portland to board a plane for Istanbul, Turkey. Head is one of five Univer sity of Oregon students sc- . Jected to work abroad this summer as part of the Ore gon Association Internation ale des Ktudiants en Sciences Economiquea et Com mer- ciales program, better known as AIESEC-US. The organization Is a busi ness education venture de signed to permit United States students to work abroad and to provide temporary jobs In America for visiting students. Head will work In an Istanbul bank. . He will make the trip to Amsterdam In a University of Oregon chartered plane. From Amsterdam to Islan , bul he will travel by train. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Head, 1413 Euclid ave., Medford, are motoring to Portland with him. Twelve Students There are 12 student from the state of Oregon In the program. The other schools represented are Portland State college, University of Portland and Lewis and Clark college. The 12 Oregon stu dents are among the 280 se lected across the nation lor participation In the program this summer. The trainee uroeram Is In its second year in Oregon. The international association of students is sponsoring the worldwide exchange nt "working 4ralnoeshlps" to promote close and friendly re lations between students of all nations. Student Administered To become members of the tralnecslifp program a stu dent must apply through the jocai cnapter. Thore is one at the University of Oregon, Head said. He made his ap plication there which was then processed to the national headquarters in New York City. The commission approved seven projects In five coun ties as part of the $894,000 construction work author'. jd on county federal aid sec ondary highway system for fiscal 19B4. The projects are in Benton, Deschutes, Gilliam. Polk and Washington counties. Deschutes county plans to transfer a portion of its al lotment to the State Highway department to spend on the Bachelor Mountain -Big Surinf section of the Cascade Lakes Highway. a Board of Advisors drawn from the business and aca demic worlds. It is financed by fees from participating U.S. companies which arc handled through AIESEC-US, Inc., a New York State non profit membership corpora tion. The program offers a stu dent an opportunity to ob serve first hand a foreign country's economic system in action. It offers remuneration sufficient to cover living and incidental expenses. The association was found ed in 19S8 by business stu dents at Columbia university. New York, and since has be come the largest organization of its kind in the United States. Today it embraces 38 countries on five continents and has provided almost 20, 000 exchange trainccships. Head will remain in Tur key two months. On his de parture for the United Stales he will spend 22 weeks trav eling from Istanbul to Paris, touring Greece, Italy and parts of France. He will return to the Uni versity of Oregon in Septem ber to start his graduate work In accounting. My daughter, having lived 12 years with no outward sign of mental instability, re cently turned 13 and, in a tradition of teen-agers, imme diately took leave of her senses. She confided, after playing a Chad Mitchell record album 49 times non-stop, that her all-consuming ambition was to meet a real, live folkslnger in the flesh in person. This from a girl who only a few short months ago had her heart set on becoming a female Albert Schweitzer. I did what any father would do under such circum stances. I had my will and testament revised, striking her name from the list of legatees who were jointly to inherit my collection of Rudy Vallee records. Then I took the case to s teenage psychologist, who recommended the shock treatment. Her fixation might be broken, he said, by over-exposure to folk singers. Fortunately - or, as it turn ed out unfortunately - I knew just the place to undertake such a cure. The Shoreham Hotel, an occasional waystop on the Hootenanny circuit, was giving asylum to an abundance of folksingers who travel under the name of the Brothers Four. Using my influence as one of the officers of NOTSOFCU SAT, I discreetly arranged for my daughter to meet them and to hear their ren dition of such haunting can tatas as "Keep Your Cotton- Pickin' Hands Off My Leather Jacket, It's the Nearest Thing I've Got to Skin, Mother." When next I saw her. she was clasping her right fore arm with her left hand. My first thought was that the treatment had exceeded expectations and that she had slashed her wrist. It turned out, however, that her right hand had been deified by handshakes with the Brothers Four and she was holding it aloft as a safe guard against contamination. . "I'll never use this hand again," she vowed, her tremu lous soprano suddenly gone husky. Although it failed to pro duce the intended results, the experiment did prove a point. It shows that you can't create toxicity to folksinging mere ly by saturating the subject with folksingers. "I never dreamed just from listening to records that folk- singers were, so young and handsome," my daughter said as she put the album on the turntable for the 81st time. That was where I made my mistake. I should have taken her to see Burl Ives.
