Drooping Eyelidt Every week I get letters from people - often you rig gtcra - who are much distress ed because their upper eyelids drop down all the time and make them look A rather stupid or sleepy. Also it U lidrd for them to see. Usually A'tarei these young: people have been to eye spe cialists who have told them they didn't know of anything to do. If I had such a trouble, I would first go to an excellent neurologist who could tell me whether I had an injury to some nerves, and what that injury was probably due to. He might tell me that I had one of the so-called muscular dystrophies in which a num ber of muscles are weak, and remain weak all the person's days. Henderson of the Mayo Clinic, in which he says that the best thing an eye surgeon can do is to shorten the levator muscle that pulls up the upper lid. I will not discuss the operative problems because they are highly tech. nical. In those many cases in which a child is born with the drooping upper lids, it is well to operate the year before the youngster goes to school. It is not advisable to operate on small children, because their tissues are too thin. Some- times the ptosed (dropped) lid is only on one side, and then the surgeon needs skill and experience if he is to get the two-slits equal in size. As the doctor says, because in many cases the muscle which lifts the eyelid does not work very well, the surgeon and the parents of the child will have to be content With what ever improvement in function can be secured - a perfect result must not be ex pected but help can be given.
