MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY. JUNE 10, KM B 5 Try and Stop Mo -By BENNETT CERF- rXX SAFARI in the African jungle, two explorers were v privileged to watch a tribal ritual dance. It was dom inated by a near-naked seven-footer, his body painted with every color in tne rain bow, wearing a hideous mask, and with horns protruding from his head. As he danced wildly about, uttering terrifying shrieks, an elderly wom an in the tribe nudged one of the explorers in the ribs and whispered proudly, "My son, the doctor!" "How I first wet your ttother is not a story for little ears nice yours," a father told his son from behind the evening financial tables. "But one thing I can tell you. It sure cured me of whistling.' 10 When the late King George V of England was a schoolboy, he found himself one day embarrassingly short of funds and wrote a heartbreaking letter to his august grandmother. Queen Vic toria, beseeching pecuniary assistance. The Queen didn't fall for It. Instead, she wrote him a testy note describing what hap pened to young whippersnappers who exceeded their allowance. Back came a letter reading, "Dearest Orandmama: I am sure you will be glad to know that I need trouble you no further for money. I sold your last letter to one of the tutors for three pounds." O by Bennett Cart Distributed by XlBf restores Syndicata Meeting Needs of Children Major Parental Concern By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Much has been written about children being bored because they are not chal lenged. Perhaps some school pro grams are not properly de signed to meet the needs of all students. Actually the problem is more involved than just a weak program. The bright student will have little difficulty with the nor mal work of any program. He could be given advanced work. Although this is a pos sibility it does not appear to be the answer. There is a great deal of controversy among experts as to the cor rect answer. Although parents should be concerned with the overall improvement of the schools, the immediate problem is meeting the needs of their child. The child should not be involved in a parent's ob jection or dissatisfaction with a teacher or school program. Based on Attitudes It is important to recognize that some part of this prob lem is based upon the atti tudes of the parent and child. Children naturally are curi ous and interested in school activities. Parents can en courage or discourage thm. John is a bright student. He always completes his as signments quickly and ac curately. He has a pleasant personality and is looked to as a leader by his peers There are many activities which interest him such as sp -ts, reading, math club and writing for the school newspaper. He constantly Is involved in a variety of val uable projects. Bill, a student in John's class, is equally capable. He apparently is unhappy with school. His work is careless and he rarely goes beyond the minimum requirements. There are few activities which interest him. He con stantly is complaining about being bored. What produces these '.wo opposite reactions in the same program? The parents of both boys are interested and par ticipate in. school activities. John's parents have encour aged him to pursue his In terests. They show concern for his work. When discus sing school they indicate con fidence in John and his teachers. Bill's parents un intentionally are discouraging him. They are quite critical of the school and teachers. Unfortunately Bill has lost re spect and tends to look down on the school program. CLASS CONTAINERS New York - Ntt - By 1968, the use of glass containers will have increased by 19 per cent over present levels, accord ing to the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute, Inc. Shipments of 204.5 million gross are forecast for 1966, compared with 171.9 million gross St the year end of 1962. PHONEY MONEY New York - (UPD - Watch your money! The Secret Ser vice reports tire public lost more than a half million dol lars because of counterfeit money in fiscal 1962. The T men say $20 bills are cur rently the . most frequently counterfeited. LEGAL NOTICES LEGAL NOTICES LEGAL NOTICES Parents must be careful to seperate their criticism of the school and their child's ad justment to the school. At ways remember that your child's success is your im mediate aim. Help him to get the most from the program. Don't use your child in at tempting to improve the sys tem. The improvement of a school system should be kept as a seperate issue. Good education Involves more than direct teaching. The child must be helped to develop his own direction. Self direction is an impor tant asset. After all, there is a point at which formal edu cation ends and the individual must be ready to continue on his own. This approach can answer partially the problem of boredoom because the chil dis challenging himself. Alumnus Leaves $400,000 to U0 Eugene - An announcement was made at the University of Oregon annual Alumni day luncheon this week end that the late Leon A. Culbertson, a university alumnus and owner of a photographic pa per company in New York, left the bulk of his estate, estimated at about $400,000, to the university for scholar ship use. Culbertson was a member of the university class of 1923. The announcement about the bequest was made by another member of the 1923 class, Owen Callaway, a retired New York executive of the W. T. Grant company and ex ecutor of the Culbertson estate. Also present at the lunch eon was Culbertson's attorney, John MacGregor, also of New York and a member of the 1923 class. Responding to Callaway's announcement was University President Arthur S. Flem ming, who expressed the uni versity's appreciation for the bequest. Culbertson died on Feb. 11. White Not In Kitchen Appliances New York - (UPI) - It seems that white no longer is the fashion in appliances. According to National Fur- niture Review magazine, some manufacturers are sel ling about 33 per cent of their refigcrators and 20 per cent of their ranges, washers and dryers In color. The most popular are yellow snd cop per. yf TAUeul I i"? tAY 21 r '69-7J 78 'JffXSTAR GAZER!
