Apathetic Individual Can't Get Excited Over Nature "It's really nothing," he said. "It happens every night Just at sunset. Why be ex cited?" This is the observation of a pretty apathetic individual, similar to that pitiful one who, while standing on the brink of the Grand Canyon, says "What's the big deal? - Just a hole in the ground." Stupid ly he sits in the car while hi family gazes in awe at this, one of Nature's greatest mas terpieces. Probably it is one result of great forces much too big for a small mind to comprehend. There are a few individuals who can walk in the silence of a great forest and see noth ing but trees. Or, they may try to estimate how many board feet of lumber is con tained In the trees, or how much money they would bring on today's market. The wildflower growing by the roadside Is, to some peo ple, just a thief that is robbing the soil of elements that could better be used to nourish some plant that someone could eat, or be grown for a profit. Consider a Danger The bumblebee, busy and minding its own business gath ering nectar and pollinating flowers, is considered a dan ger - a creature that may sting. The beauty of a butter fly is lost because a casual familiarity with its life his tory reveals the fact it will lay eggs that will hatch out into leaf-eating larva. Many of us consider only those things important that yield us a profit. If it isn't good to eat, or benefits us directly, we consider it worth less. If many little things, ani mal or plant, serve no obvious purpose, as far as man's puny mind can understand, ' they should be destroyed. The fact that they might fit In somewhere and mean a lit tle something escapes us com pletely. Many of us have a pretty warped conception of what is important to the gen eral good of the greatest num ber of people. Picture, if you can, a flower garden with never a butterfly hovering over the blossoms; a summer day without the lazy drone of bees. Feel a lit tle sorry for those deluded folks who, because they were stung once, think every bee, hornet and wasp should be forever banished from .the earth. You might be surprised to find how many folks de sire such a situation. Part of America You probably fail to con sider it important at the pres ent time, but a bird singing outside your window is a part of America - a simple little series of notes that would be missed if they were forever LEGAL NOTICES r RESOLUTION NO. 20B9 A RESOLUTION declaring in tention of the City Council to con atruct m water main along Bessie Street from Sallng Avenue to Jack son Street and on Jackson Street from Beaie Street to Undley Ave nue and on Undley Avenue from Jackson Street to Reddy Avenue and to asses the cost thereof against properties fronting thereon; and setting a time and place for hearing thereon. Imagine a grassy mea dow without a meadow lark, or the call of a quail in the hush of evening; this is a part of rural America that should always oe preserved. It is a little, wild voice that the city dweller who has been surrounded by harshness for months would be happy to hear on his occasional visit to the country. At such times. But Albert Gillis did, and maybe he had the, right idea oil olong. He didn't buy a new cor for 33 years becaus he didn't happen to need one. He ond his 1929 Model A Ford did just fine by" each other. He always did his own repairs and even jaded it up at night to save the tires. When he needed a new cor lost year, he went out ond bought a Volkswagen. "I heard they hold up," he explained. Does he like the VW? Mr. Gillis is 78, o Justice oi the Peace, and not given to hasly decisions. "Your inspectors sure do o good job of inspect, ing," was as far as he would go.
