Orioles Trim Yankees 4-2
To Regain Loop Leadership
By United Pratt International
Ralph Houk and Billy
Hitchcock have another feud
going and this one could be
a pip.
The two manager! had to
be teparated during a sud
den flareup in New York latt
summer. Neither threw any
punchet in Baltimore Thurs
day night but both got in
tome hot tempered conversa
tional licks after the Orioles
a l'i game lead in the Amer
lean league race.
"We'll win the pennant,"
snapped Houk, obviously
smarting over the fact the
Yankees lost two out of three
games to the Orioles.
"Baltimore won't beat us.
You can bet on that and
you can put it in headlines."
Cooling off a bit, Houk
conceded "the Orioles have a
good ball club," then hastily
beat the Yankees 4-2 to take added, "but I think we have

a better one - even with our
injuries."
Apprised of the Yankee
manager's comments, Hitch
cock countered:
"I'm glad Houk is so con
cerned about the Orioles. He
must really be worried about
us to be so concerned."
The Yanks fell behind ear
ly Thursday night, finally
tied the score at 2-all in the
top of the eighth and then
saw the Orioles break the tie
in the bottom of the inning
when singles by Brooks Rob
inson and Jim Gentile off
loser Stan Williams capped
a two-run rally.
Dick Hall, who relieved
Baltimore starter Robin Rob
erts with one out in the
eighth, hurled scoreless ball
the rest of the way for his
second victory, both over the
Yankees.
The Yankees, who lost Mic
key Mantle for at least a
month when he suffered a
broken bone in his left foot
Wednesday night, also suf
fered another blow Thursday
night when starter Jim Bou-
ton was struck on the jaw
by Jackie Brandt's line drive

Overwhelming Favorite
A victory for Candy Spots
in the Belmont would go a
long way toward clinching
the 3-year-old championship
for him and those in the know
are openly predicting such a
success. At entry time, Can
dy Spots was listed as an
overwhelming 2-5 favorite.
Only Chateaugay, the Ken
tucky Derby winner, was be
ing given much of a chance
of creating an upset. Chateau
gay had an important work
out Thursday and the results
were all good following an
abortive effort Wednesday
when he pulled up after three
furlongs and refused to run
any farther.
Chateaugay was quoted al
4-1 in the early line; Top
Gallant and Bonjour both
were 10-1; Tom Cat and In
surrection were at 20-1; and
Choker was the 30-1 outsider.
