Club Schedules Friday Meeting The first meeting of the newly formed Southern Ore gon Advertising club will be held at a 12.15 p.m. no-host luncheon Friday, June 7. at the Colony restaurant in Med ford, according to President Pro-Tern, Bob ord. Anyone interested in ad vertising and advertising pro ductions has been invited to attend. Purpose of the club will be to advance the cause of ad vertising in the southern Ore gon area by raising the standards of advertising prac tices, presenting weekly pro grams with speakers on sub jects of interest to advertising practitioners and by stimulat ing new ideas and techniques of marketing. Other topics of discussion at the meeting will be making skills of the group available for community projects, pro tecting the advertiser and the industry alike against dis criminatory legislation, and explaining advertising as a legal and honorable salesman. Brown's Death Moratorium Killed Sacramento, Calif. (UPU Gov. Edmund G. Brown's latest attempt to close the California gas chamber died Wednesday night in a hostile Senate committee. The governor, who earlier had bombarded committee members with public state ments and personal appeals, immediately issued another statement predicting that cap ital punishment will some day "be abandoned as surely as other barbaric customs." Brown's bill at this legisla tive session was a compro mise measure that would have closed the gas chamber for only four years to all but certain kinds of criminals. Exempted from its provisions would be double-killers, kid-nap-murders, persons who slay police officers and pris oners who kill while in prison. At earlier sessions he tried and failed to get complete abolition, most dramatically in 1060 when kidnap-rapist and best selling author Caryl Chessman waited on death row.
