MEDFORD Will Become Effective Zip stands for Zone Im provement Plan, the project of the United States post office department, which will go into effect July 1. But it also signifies Just what the dictionary definition states "To move or act with speed," Acting Postmaster Al Hradlord, Chester suilman, superintendent of mails, and Boyce Kellogg, assistant sup erintendent of mails, have ex plained in announcing the Medford post office's partici pation in the new program. After July 1, anyone living in the Medford area will be living in "975." That's the Zip code number for the sec tion to be served by the Med ford post office. Speed Mail Movement Adoption of this code num ber will speed up movement of the mails in all parts of the nation and the first thing for local individuals to remember, Bradford emphasized, is to put the code number on return addresses. Those living within Medford will add an "01," those under Central Point de livery an "02." Other zone digits, as the latter numbers are called, will be announced in the near future. The Zip code is designed to speed delivery of out-of-town mail, lessening the chances for letters to go astray and .eliminating the necessity of reworking a great volume of mail, the Medford staff re lated. The new designation num ber consists of five digits. The first digit, or "9," stands for the Pacific Coast. The second number, in this case the "7," signifies Oregon; the third, the "5," identifies the section al 'center, the city of Medford, and adjacent areas. Placing Code Number In addressing mail the Zip Code number (complete) should be placed on the same line and one space after the name of the state to which the letter is being sent, Brad ford said. For example: Mr. John Doe 626 State St. Medford, Oregon 97501 Or if writing to someone under Central Point delivery: Mr. John Doe 626 State st. Central Point, Oregon 97502 Using the Zip code in re turn addresses will speed de livery throughout the nation, Bradford advised, particularly in dealing with firms or agencies handling a large volume of man. "The company to which you are writing can oftc presort electronically all future mail ings directly to you, by-pass-ing a number of mail han dlings," he explained.
