If they do not comply with the order of health authori ties of Lower Morion Twp., near Philadelphia, they face the possibility of losing an estimated $1.5 million a year in milk sales. The Amish are a religious sect, many of whom shun such modern conveniences as automobiles and electricity. Will Enforce Rule But recently township authorities made an inspec tion tour of Amish dairy farms and passed the word that it would strictly enforce one of its rules that specifics electric lighting on farms supplying milk to the town ship. Scaliest Dairy traditionally has bought milk from the Amish and is completely satisfied as to its quality. Scaltcst even picks up milk on Saturday night and early Monday morning so as not to violate Amish religious principles against doing work on Sunday. But when the township ad vised Sealtest that it would enforce the electricity regu lation, it had no choice but to advise Amish suppliers to electrify their barns by March 1, 1964, or find other markets for their milk. Strict Regulations Approximately 200 .Amish farmers shipping between 45, 000 and 50,000 quarts of milk a day out of Lcaman Place, Pa., are involved. Lower Merion township is in milk control district 1-A, and their regulations - ad mittedly "very strief'-effec-lively serve to control milk supplies for oilier communi ties in the same district. Sealtest, for example, could not afford to ignore a town ship health ruling and there by lose its customers in that township and probably in the entire control district. The Amish have nearly a year to decide whether or not they will adhere to their be liefs and sacrifice a substan tial annual income. lliii WORDS fat COMFORT iiu c UL mi Arise, shine: for thy light is come, end the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. The Oregon Democrat said such organizations were fi nanced by tax free contri butions from businessmen. She listed several organiza tions she said took in more than $5.5 million of tax - ex empt contributions annually.
