Sammy Houston Lcffew, 18, Gold Hill, pleaded guilty to the charges and imposition of sentences was suspended for six months. Trial of Ralph Wesley Har ris, 33, of 168' j North Second St., Ashland, will be held May 27 in district court. The case of Alma Geraldine Calhoun, 34, of 164'j B St., Ashland, on the same charges, will be continued to Monday. Her bail was set at $150. Crater Lake Observes Its 61st Anniversary Crater Lake National park observed its 61st birthday this week. The area became the coun try's fifth national park on May 22, 1902, when President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Act of Congress creating the park and assuring preserva tion of the area's natural fea tures. The action culminated 17 years of dedicated work by William G. Steel. "Father of Crater Lake National Park," acording to Supcrintedcnt W. Ward Ycager. Tradition relates that young Steel learned of Crater lake as a schoolboy in Kansas. Charley was the first lead er of a beef club in Jackson county about 1936 which was called the Lake Creek Wran glers, and first master of the Lake Creek Grange. Two former 4-H club agents of Jackson county who attend ed were Ed Albaugh, Adin, Calif., here 1936-37; and L. E. (Bing) Francis, Susanville, Calif., from 1940 to 1944. Their wives accompanied them. Traveling from the Coos Bay area to attend were Mr. and Mrs. Reed Charley and Mrs. Kenneth Stocks. Mr. and Mrs. William Jennings and family attended from Sacra mento. Former County Agents Al baugh and Francis reminisced about their experiences here as a feature of the program. Much of modern day beef cat tle and animal husbandry practices originated in this early day 4-H program and were adopted by the farmers later. Getting the early 4-H program was not easy, but gradually became popular un der the support of Floyd Chat ley who was attending the agricultural school in Corval lis at that time. Distributed br King Features Syndicate Publication of Notices Regarding Rights on Claims Starts in Area Publication of notices re garding surface resource rights on unpatented mining claims in several southern Oregon areas has started, the bureau of land management has informed the Rogue River National forest. The first publication of no tice on the Applegate Area started May 15. The notice will be published for nine consecutive weeks under the heading "Notice to Mining Claimants." May 22 was the first publi cation date for the notice re garding the Elk Creek area. It will also be published for nine consecutive weeks. Maps of the two areas are now being published There also are copies of the Multiple Use Mining Law of July 23, 1955, and of the procedure for the determination of surface rights set up by the law avail able for inspection at the of fice of C. E. Brown, forest su pervisor, in the Medford post office building. A claimant has two options under the law, the BLM point ed out. He may ignore the notices, thereby waiving rights to the surface until the claim goes to patent, yet maintaining his orginal min ing rights. The claimant may file a verfied statement as serting his rights to the sur face. In that case his claim will be examined by mineral examiners. Claims of questionable val idity will be considered before a hearing officer of the BLM, who will make the final de cision. The claimant and the forest service will present tes timony at the hearing. Seaman Recruit Richard L. Baer, 18, Wichita, Kan., was taken to the base hospital Wednesday. Attcndents said he was seriously ill. Three recruits have died in the epidemic, which at one point saw 8.500 recruits given penicillin tablets. Bacr's was the first case reported since doctors switched to penicillin from sulfadiazine.
