Nothing had bean heard
from tha three wrestlers this
morning and It was still un
known why they failed to ap
pear. Jack Dalton had bean con
tacted Wednesday night when
he was informed that ha had
a fast gun draw match with
Georga Flanagan Jr. of Med
ford and ha said at that time
that ha would come prepared.
Tha card was delayed some
20 minutes while awaiting tha
rrlral of tha wrestlers. Then
Andre Drapp and Calallna
George Drue, who were not
scheduled to wrestle each oth
er, went into tha ting for a
ene-fsll match, with everyone
hoping the missing matman
would show up before the first
match was over.
FANS UNEASY

a shoulder stand after about
15 minutes In a good bout but

Look Magazine
San Francisco - IUPD - First
baseman Orlando Cepeda of
the San Francisco Giants filed
$1 million libel suit against
Look magazine Thursday,
charging he was "defamed."
The suit was tiled In su
perior court by attorney
Marvin Lewis and asks tor
$300,000 general damages snd
1500,000 as extempiBry or
punitive damages.
The article, written by Look
Sporta Editor Tim Cohane,
said Cepeda was not a team
man, Jealous ot Willie Mays,
and was on the trading block.
"Cepeda is a very sensitive
man," said Lewis. "What the
article said and what it Im
plied Is not the truth."
Lewis also said that the
article has affected Cepeda's
batting. But Cepeda is the
leading hitter on the Giants
with a .318 average.

In NAIA District

college's Red Raiders headed
for Salem today to defend
their NAIA track and field
championship. The meet is set
for Saturday at McCulloch
stadium.
Raider Coach Dan Bulkley
said that every member of
the team who placed in last
week end s Oregon Collegiate
conference meet here would
contend in the Salem event.

his new teammates that he
"learns fast" and still has "a

The fiery, 33-year-old for
mer Boston, Cleveland and
Washington outfielder was
sold to the Mets Thursday in
what was understood to have
been part payment for New
York's release of Gil Hodges
to become manager of the
Senators.
He's due here before the
Mets' game with the St. Louis
Cardinals tonight and is ex
pected to start in center field
for manager Casey Stengel's
cellar club.
"I'd been expecting some
thing," said Piersall when the
deal was announced. "It's
baseball, you come and you
go. You do your best and try
to stay in shape. I'm in shape
and feel I've got a lot of base

Move Into High
Speed Brackets
Indianapolis -(UPD- With one
more full day of practice left
before the final week end of
time trials for the Memorial
Day 500-mile auto race, veter
an drivers who have not yet
qualified are moving into the
speed brackets believed neces

Although some of the top
performances in Thursday's
heavy traffic at the Speedway
were by drivers who already
have put their cars In the
starting lineup, several of the
drivers still seekine berths
had laps in the 149-150 m.p.h
bracket.
The first good weather in
almost one week had some 40
cars put on the track during
the almost windless day.
Pamela Jones, who set a
new track record last week
when he won the pole position
for the second year in a row,
turned in the day's best per
formance with eight laps at an
unofficial 151 m.p.h. or bet
ter. His top speed on the elec
tric eye timer was 151.976
m.p.h.

track and field stars of the
young 1963 season are gather
ing here for the 22nd running
of the California relays Satur
day. But as powerful as all the
athletes were, the spotlight
was centered on the mile race,
featuring Peter Snell of New
Zealand and Jim Beatty of
United States, plus Bobby Sea
man, Cary Weisiger and Jim
Grelle - all sub-four minute
milers.
Speculation
There was some speculation
that the world mark of 3:54.4,
now held by Snell, would fall
-and by a full second or more.
The track is fast and the fore
cast is for good weather.
This event is set for 7:45
p.m. and will be televised na
tionally. But there are other great
sports figures entered, too.
.The top relay teams in the
country also will swing into
action. They are Southern Illi
nois, Oregon, Stanford, Texas
Southern, Oregon State, San
