ORECON Portland Summer Term Offers Courses From Five State Colleges ' Portland - A student at tending the 1963 Portland summer term of the Oregon state system of higher educa tion could take courses from five ol the state's public col leges and universities and nev er leave Portland. The unique summer term, largest held each year in Ore gon, starts June 17 and runs to Aug. 9. An 1 1-week session, for lower division students, goes from June 17 to Aug. 30. Enrollment may reach 5,000. Dean James W. Sherburne of the general extension divi sion, which administers the Portland summer term, said there probably is no counter part in the nation to the Port land session. The eight-week summer term this year will include more than 360 credit courses from University of Oregon, Oregon State univer sity, Portland State college, Oregon College of Education, and Southern Oregon college. Dean Sherburne explained that most colleges throughout the nation arc limited to offer ing only courses of their own institution, during cither the summer or the regular aca demic year. But in Oregon, the coordi nated state system of higher education enables its general extension division to offer courses from any campus wherever they are needed in the state. The institutions ap prove instructors and courses to be offered off-campus rind the extension division admin isters the courses. A majority of the courses offer ed from state institutions out side Portland will be for grad uate credit. Portland State college will contribute about 150 credit courses to the eight-week ses sion and another 24 during the 11-week term. Although the general exten sion division docs not confer degrees, hundreds of students take graduate work in Port land each summer, as well as during the regular year, and apply the credit toward a planned degree program at one of the state system col leges or universities. The summer ! terms are planned so that studepts may complete all of their course-work toward a master's degree in these fields without ever leaving the Port land area. ' The regulra credit offerings this summer will be supple mented by some 30 special workshops and seminars. Top ics will range from special education programs for teach ers to programed learning, radiation and health, ard con servation education which may appeal to teachers as well as persons in business, indus try and government, Most of the classes held dur ing the summer meet in build ings on the Portland State col lege campus, although many special programs are sched uled throughout the city. Sev eral workshops in conserva tion and camping education will hold sessions at camps in the Cascade mountains. Funds Sought To Investigate Pests Washington -IUPU- Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall told Congress Wednesday that pesticides are threatening both nature and man. Udall asked a Senate sub committee for more research funds to investigate their harmful effects. Organic pesticides such as DDT kill many kinds of liv ing matter beyond what they are designed to do, he said. Udall said residue from the chemicals had been found in game birds, fish and other animals, and may affect hu man beings. Credit Executives Expected at Seminar Portland - More than 150 credit executives from Ore gon are expected to attend a seminar on "Oregon's Uni form Commercial Code," June 6 at Portland State college. The seminar is jointly spon sored by the Oregon Associa tion of Credit Managment and PSC. It will feature portions of the new code, effective Sept. 1. of greatest interest to those who extend credit either secured or on open ac count terms, according to Dr. Albert Dehner, professor in business administration at USC and seminar moderator. Signature Expected On Explosives Bill The measure growing out of the requests of Applegate area ranchers for action to protect stock from stored ex plosives is on the Governor's desk and he is expected to sign it this week, according to report from Jackson Coun ty, Representative James A. Redden. i The Oregon House of Rep-1 rescntatives - accepted a con ference committee report on SB 98 relating to explosives. Representative Redden asked the House to concur with Senate amendments deleting reference to gunpowder in the bill, which is designed to re quire safe storage of explosives. Applegate ranchers regis- tcrest their complaints and requests for legislation after they lost slock which con sumed an abandoned cache of explosives. GETS NEW HAIRCUT Washington -lUPIu President Kennedy's two -year -old son has a new haircut. The White House said Wednesday the boy's long hair had been trim med by his nurse, Maud Shaw, and he now has a part on the left side.
