Students From Area In Honors Program Corvallis Six students from the Mcdford area are en rolled in the school of science honors program this year at Oregon State university. They are James A. Al bright, Nona J. Donahue, Nicholas F. Gier Jr., Alfred Mercer, freshman, and Jo seph H. Beatty, sophomore, all of Medford; and Alice A. Thompson, junior, Central Point. The science honors program was started three years ago to "enrich educational opportu nities for the more able stu dents and to recognize scholar ly achievement." A total of 67 freshmen, SO sophomores, 23 juniors, and IS seniors are participating in the special program this year. - Under the program, stu dents are enrolled in honors sections in several departments, do extra work such as readings, research and seminars, and take some spe cial classes. At graduation, they receive diplomas that in dicate honors in their specific fields. SELECTED FOR SIGMA XI Corvallis Norman E. Paw lowski, route 1, box 8, Jack sonville, has been selected for membership at Oregon State university in Sigma Xi, na tional research honor society. Membership is based on re search accomplishments. OREGON, THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1963 PAGES 1 to 10 Kennedy To Attend Birthday Dinner Washington -Drr-President Kennedy was to fly to New York today for a day of sen timentality and politics capped by a birthday dinner which is costing some 650 well-wishers $1,000 a plate to attend. Kennedy's only other an nounced purpose for a 24-hour stay in Manhattan was to par ticipate in the dedication of a memorial to 4,596 servicemen killed in the western Atlantic during World War II. The President's schedule called for him to motor to Battery Park for the ceremony from Idlewild Airport after a jet flight from Andrews Air Force Base, Md. - - After speaking at the me morial, Kennedy planned to go to the Carlyle Hotel in mid Manhattan to spend a quiet afternoon in his penthouse suite. Tonight, there was no ques tion about politics being in the limelight, with the party's treasury being enriched more than a half-million dollars by the birthday tribute to Ken nedy. He will be 46 years old on May 29. LICENSE SUGGESTED Concord, N.H. - lUPI) - The state Fish and Game depart ment said an unidentified man who takes his retriever, Chico, fishing has reported that the dog frequently stands at full point when it spots a trout lazing in a brook. He wanted to know if this was legal. The department said it wasn't illegal but suggested the dog should have a fishing license. Moose Juniors To Play at Festival The Moose Juniors of the Medford Moose lodge under the direction of Bliss Heine, will participate in the Azalea Festival Saturday at Brook ings, . . The group will meet in uni form Saturday at 9 a.m. across the street from the Brookings Chamber of Com merce. Those leaving Med ford Saturday morning will meet at the Moose hall, 11 Newtown St., at 4:30 a.m. The group includes some 50 youths,- and several en gagemtnts have been booked for them in addition to the Azalea Festival. The letter men elected Dwayne Chap man, president; Jerry Wil son, vice president; and Irvin Hall, secretary-treasurer. The pepsters elected Beth Biden, president; Barbara Beck, vice president; Fran Arlmire, sec retary; and La Quita Barnes, treasurer.' The final national school assembly program of the year was offered recently. Bill Jacobs provided a program of music novelties. He began by playing the marimba, next obtained music from bicycle horns, little aluminum pans and bottles filled with liquids, and wound up by using dogs and a clown as musical puppets. Students in the fourth grade have seen two science films recently, "Beaver Val ley" and "Seal Island.'' The class has been learning to add unlike fractions and has been studying perimeters and areas.
