Southern Oregon's defend ing track, champion Red Raid ers face a serious challenge from a fast-improving Port land State Viking team. Coach Dan Bulklcy's SOC cinder team snapped a string of three consecutive PSC championships last spring on the strength of victory in the final mile relay event. The string Red Raiders dropped the Vikings 76-55 in their dual meeting this spring, but Coach Ralph Davis' Green and White team has shown spectacular improvement in the late season. Southern Oregon's bid will hinge on Bulkley's over all team depth to back up sprint er Doyle Bransom, pole vault ers Gordon and Mike Hanby, both 14-footers, and hurdler Bill White in addition to ver satile Fred Thomas, broad and triple Jumper as well as a 9.9 sprinter. Grants Pass and Medford are expected to battle it out for the team title. However, how Medford does may de pend on the health of sprinter Jim Hill. The 100 and 220- yard dash man, broad jumper and relay runner pulled a hamstring muscle Tuesday. A question mark hangs over his participation. While the team title will be an important objective, ine big aim of the schools will be to qualify as many as possible for the state meet on the fol lowing week end at Corvallis First and second placers and those who meet certain stand ards get to make the trip. A check by Jerry Acklen of the Grants Pass Courier with the Oregon School Activities as sociation yesterday confirmed that only two performers from a school may enter the state, meet in any one event.
