10 c Dick Stuart Smacks Ball Over Wall Twice; Drives In Seven Runs for Bosox By United Press International Some guys back up to the pay window, but Dick Stuart had to be different - he went clear over the wall. Twicel That's the friendly leftficld wall at Fenway park and what better time to his a cou ple of balls over it than on pay day? They passed out the pay checks all over the majors Wednesday and Stuart picked the occasion to pace the sec ond place Boston Red Sox to a B-3 and 7-8 twi-night sweep over the Los Angeles Angels ; with a grand slam homer In the opener and a three - run homer in the nightcap. ' It was kind of a mixed-up night for the ex-Pittsburgh first baseman. The Fenway park crowd of 12,789 booed him for commit ting his first two errors of the season but also cheered him for hitting his sixth hom er with the bases full in the Six Will In District Track ' Six of:1962's Individual 'champions will defend and one half of last year's win ning relay team will contend in that event when the Dis trict 6 A-l track and field is - staged on Saturday at, Med ford High school. Saturday's field event and race preliminaries are sched uled to get underway at 10 a.m. The high Jump is set for 2:30 p.m. and track finals are billed for a 3 p.m. start. Individual champions re turning from the 1082 meet are Paul Bransom, Crater; Steve Tocws, Medford, and tarry Lindquist, Marty Bauer, Cliff Lyons and Gary Van Koten, all of Grants Pass High school. i Bransom won ' the broad jump and Toews established a 2:00.3 district record in the half-mile. Other record-better ing efforts at Klamath Falls last year were not allowed be Candy No. 1 Cho Mce in Preakness ' Baltimore -flfPD Entries for Saturday's 87th running of the $130,000 added Preakness Stakes were to close today with Darby Dan Farm's Cha teagay, the Kentucky Derby winner, named ahead of time just as he was at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. Trainer Jimmy Conway, who had to leave for New York Wednesday, filed the entry before he left "just so there will be no slip-up." ' And when the box closes, the names o f Candy Spots, Never Bend, Sky Wonder, On My Honor, Lemon Twist and Country Squire were expected to join that of Chateaugay, completing the field of seven. Although he won the Ken tucky Derby by a length and one-half, Chateaugay once again finds himself cast In the role of underdog. For Candy Spots, third in the Kentucky Derby, Is prc-race favorite at 7-5 with Never Bend, second at Churchill Downs, second choice at 2-1. Chateaugay ranks third at 5-2. Candy Spots, winner of the Santa Anita derby and the Florida Derby this year, suf fered his only defeat in the Kentucky Derby, many ob servers blaming jockey Willie Shoemaker for his third place finish, 'Shoemaker again rides tiic son of Nigromante, who now boasts six wins In seven races. Never Bend, winner of the Flamingo Stakes and the champion Juvenile of 19S2. will be ridden by Manny Ycaza. The colt is ranked bet ter than Chateaugay because several of his rsccs prior to the Kentucky Derby were easy victories and he is cx peeled to improve with a tough race now behind him L-C Names Sempert Portland -0IPH- Dean Sem pert has been named basket ball coach at Lewis and Clark college, president John R Howard announced today. Not In Relay Bob Shepard, Rich Ireland and Dennis O'Leary are back from last years champion Grants Pass relay crew. But, unless Coach Russ Werner changes his mind, O'Leary will not be participating in that event. He'll vie in the broad jump and low hurdles in which he was second last year and in the high hurdles. Other second placers In dis trict last year, who'll contend in Saturday's meet are Ire land, Shepard and Bauer and Mcdford's Scott Hampson. Ire land was second in both the 100 and 220-yard events. This time he'll be in the 100 but not the 220 and will enter the broad jump. Shepard tied tor second in the highs and will be in that event plus the 100 and low hurdles. Bauer's second was in the discus. He'll vie in this contest again' aong with the shot and javelin Hampson, the runncrup in the quarter-mile, is an uncer tain entrant in the 1983 meet because of a pulled muscle. He, however, is listed for the 440, the 100 and the relay. Bransom is listed for the low hurdles and relay along with the broad jump. Lyons Is slated to "double," running the half as well as the mile. Lindquist, Toews and Van Koten are to take part only in silicic events, according to the entry lists. Pole Vault At SOC Preliminaries and finals arc slated in the morning in all field events but the high jump. The pole vault will be conducted at 10 a.m. at South ern Oregon college to take ad vantage of the rubber-asphalt runway. Because the jayvce baseball game between Med ford and Klamath Falls docs not begin until 1 p.m., it will be possible to use the baseball area for field events in the morning. Medford hopes In the meet suffered a blow when sprinter Jim Hill pulled up lame on Tuesday. The pulled muscle makes his entry in the dashes, broad Jump and relay a ques tion mark. Last year in district Hill ran 9.7 and 21.9 century and furlong preliminaries then a pulled muscle kept him from qualifying for state. First and second places in the district qualify for the stale track encounter. Also, subject to limitation athletes who achieve certain standards will qualify. Limitations have been amended so that It is possible three entrants from any one school In any one event to make state. Koufax, who hurled a no hitter against the San Fran cisco Giants last Saturday night, not only went nine in nings Wednesday night but did better than that, going 12 while leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 extra-inning triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. The southpaw fastballer gave up 11 hits but struck out 12 and did not walk a man. It was only the second time in his major league career that he did not give up a walk during an entire game. Ron Fairly provided Kou fax with his fifth victory by singling home Jim Gilliam from second base in the bot tom of the 12th. Reliever Johnny Klippstein had retired 14 straight batters before Gilliam singled in the 12th and moved up to second base on Bob Oldis' passed ball. Braves Down Cardinals Elsewhere in the National league, the Milwaukee Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardi nals 9-3, the league-leading San Francisco Giants shaded the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3, the Cincinnati Reds crushed the Chicago Cubs 10-2, and the New York Mets snapped the Houston Colts' six-game win ning streak 7-4. Bob Hcndley of the Braves held the Cardinals hitlcss for 8 13 innings before Curt Flood tripled. The Milwaukee southpaw gave up two more hits in the ninth and settled for a three-hitter and his fourth victory. Denis Mcnke connected for his fourth hom er of the year off Curt Sim mons, who lost his first game after five straight victories. Held To Four Hits The Giants were limited to four hits by loser Don Card well and two Pirate relievers but rallied for four runs in the fifth to win. Cardwell, now 1-5, walked winning pitcher Juan Marchial (5-3) with the bases full in the fifth and hit Felipe Alou with a pitch to force in another run. An error by third baseman Bob Bailey on Willie Mays' hard smash produced two more runs. Frank Robinson and rookie Pete Rose each collected three hits to pace the Reds to their victory over the Cubs as Jim Maloncy won his first game of the season with help from Al Worthinglon. 1 BRILL METAL WORKS Com mtrc Induitritl Rsidtntiil Shttt Mtt.il Work Stain Uu Glvniitd and Coppor Fabrication 2287 West Main PHONE 772-4440 Men's Best Ball In 2nd Round Men's best ball fioli tour nament at Rogue Valley Country club haj advanced to the second round and matches In the round are to be completed by May 26. Back in action after a three-week layoff because of a severe hamstring pull, will be javelin ace John Burns, with a best effort of 250 feet 1 inch this spring. Forman suffered a slight muscle pull in his heel while speeding to a 4:00.3 mile clocking last week.
