MAY 12. 1963 Awards Announced During SOC Mothers' Week End Ashland - Four-h u n d r e d mothers and fathers are in Ashland this week end or the 17th annual celebration ol Mothers' day on the campus of Southern Oregon college. The Associated Women Stu dtnts of SOC are hostesses for the annual observance. Gen era! chairman was Lani Fren zel, Redmond, Ore., president of AWS and master of cere monies for the Honors assem bly was Carol Sandburg, Coos Bay, Ore. The week end program be gan with a meeting of South ern Oregon College Mothers' club; election and installation of new officers was held. In stalled were Mrs. Arthur Schwiebert, Ashland, presi dent; Mrs. Paul Sakraida, Grants Pass, vice-president; Mrs. Ellis Wilcox. Central Point, secretary; Mrs. Harry Palton, Butte Falls, treasurer. Additional support for the stu dent, loan fund was the prin cipal business of the clpb meeting. Students Installed New officers for the Asso ciated Women Students, in stalled by Mrs. Mabel Win ston, dean of women, are Mary Miss Mary Jo Batter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Batser, S33 South Holly street, is the newly installed president of Associated Wom en students of Southern Ore gon college. Miss Batser was also named Girl of the Term during the Mothers' Week end activities at the school yester day, and was among the wom en tapped for Robes, service and honor group of upper class women at SOC. Taking office were (laft to right) Mrs. Richard Chamberlain, Beta Nu, Eagle Point: Mrs. Ernest Black, Delta Omega, and Mrs. Davis Young, Alpha Lambda, both Medford. Members of hus bands were guests for the. event. Mrs. A. N. Bradford was installed chairman of the Mod ford Coordinating committee of Parent-Teacher associations at a meeting of the group last week in Jefferson school, Mrs. M. O. Grove, regional vice president of the Oregon Con gress of Parents and Teachers, was the installing officer. Francis Guidry was install ed vice chairman; Mrs. Max Weston, secretary, and Mrs. Bernard Rice, treasurer. Guidelines for PTA lead ers was the topic presented by Mts. Grove when she ad dressed the group. She ex plained that PTA basically is a group of parents and teach ers in partnership for promo tion of total welfare of all children and youth .every where. It is not an entertain ment group, not a fund-raising group, but an educational group that is non-commercial, non-sectarian and non-political, she stressed. Ceremonies Conclude Sorority Week Epsilon Sigma Alpha Inter national week was concluded May 4 with installation of of ficers for the Rogue Area council chapters of this sorority. Dinner for mem bers and husbands at the Rogue Valley Country Club preceded the Installation. Mrs. Lyman Smith, Med ford, area council president, served as mistress of ceremo nies and Installing officer. State officers introduced were Mrs. W. H. Fischer, first vice president; Mrs. Leland A. Carpenter, parliamentarian and Mrs. Robert Shangle, Grapevine editor. Mrs. Rich ard Chamberlain assisted these officers in the candle lighting ceremony of the jewels. Officers installed for Alpha Lambda were Mrs. Davis Young president; Mrs. Herb ert Partridge, vice president; Mrs. Harold Edmonds, record ing secretary; Mrs. Betty Har rison, corresponding secre tary; Mrs. Jack Huston, treas urer; Mrs. Kenneth Oliver, educational director; and Mrs. Glenn Wilkins, parliamentar ian. Mrs. Delbert Cantrall Jr., past president, assisted Mrs. Smith. Beta Nil officers are Mrs. Richard Chamberlain, presi dent; Mrs. Robert Kimmel, vice president; Mrs. James Anderson, recording secre tary; Mrs. Douglas Harsh barger, corresponding secre tary; Mrs. Thomas Mast, treasurer; Mrs. Vernon Stew ard, educational director and Mrs. Kenneth Vannice, parlia mentarian. Mrs. Vannice is junior past president. She was unable to attend, and Mrs, Lief Ostmo assisted with the installation. New officers for Delta Omega are Mrs. Ernest Black, president, Mrs. Robert Bown, vice president, Mrs. Patricia Brinson, recording secetary, Mrs. Earl Curnow, correspond ing secretary, Mrs. Carpenter, treasurer, Mrs. George Ber scheid, educational director, and Mrs. Shangle, parliamen tarian. Mrs. Richard Meistcr as junior past president as sisted in the installation of these officers. Oustanding members were introduced from each chap ter. These are Mrs. Brown, Delta Omega; Mrs. Cantrall, Alpha Lambda and Mrs. Van nice, Beta Nu. Mrs. Cantrall was awarded the outstanding member tro phy at the recent state con vention. Mrs. Chester Peterson, a 15-year ESA member, pre sented service pins to Mrs. Cantrall, Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. William Riggert, and Mrs. Vannice for five years; Mrs. Shangle, seven years; Mrs. Smith, eight years and Mrs. Oliver for ten years membership, Mrs. Fischer and Mrs. How, ard Phillips were also intro duced as having previously received 10-year awards. The Rogue Area council philanthropic report will be entered in the international contest. A total of 1250 hours have been donated by mem bers of the three chapters. Delta Omega had 547 hours, the record number reported in the state contest, Mrs. Carpenter, Jackson County Easter seal chairman, reported $3,784.66 has been collected in the annual drive. This project is sponsored by the ESA chapter In Jackson county and all work is con ducted or supervised by them. Pins were presented to Mrs. Cantrall, Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Robert Rae, Mrs. Riggert and Mrs. Vannice for working on these projects for five or more years. Mrs. Carpenter and Mrs. Chamberlain assisted Mrs. Smith with the programs and decorations for the banquet and installation. The speaker also explained that working as a group in membership with county, state and national Congress of PTA affords a continuity and a nation-wide significance, a power in numbers. The Oregon Teacher Schol arship project was presented by Mrs. Owen Kunkel, who explained that scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors, who will enroll in teacher education in college and that they are con tinuing four-year tuition schol arships. Twenty-five new scholar ships have been awarded and 75 renewals made this year. However, she stated, 400 ap plications have been received. Introduced were Miss Gail Scharfe, Phoenix High school, a new awardee: Miss Mary de Place, and Mrs. Aedcne Heath, both southern Oregon college juniors, who received renewal scholarships. Miss de Place is a Medford High school gradu ate and Mrs. Jensen was grad uated from Eagle Point High school. Jackson county PTA units have contributed $775 this year to the Oregon Teach- Scholarship program, an increase of $286. However, she added Wis amount is not suffi cient to maintain the Jackson county participants. bchool administrators are working on a code of conduct for the students at Medford High school.
