Mr. Loring said that while the form of the name was suggested by Medford, Mass., he really named the new community in Oregon because It was situated at the middle ford on Bear Creek . . , The best author ities seem to agree that the name of Medford, Mass., comes from the old English words mead and ford, meaning a ford at a meadow. Mr. Loring may have had in mind a combination of mede and ford In which mede is an obsolete abbreviation for medium, . hence middle." Why not Middle Ford park? It has character history, interest, and true applicability. The park is on the "middle ford" of Bear Creek, and much of it is meadow-like in character. Anyone like it? Besides us? E. A. A Small Laugh for the Senate With so many serious problems still facing them, we sometimes get a bit irritated at the members of the legislature for spending time on what seems to be silly, inconsequential or, some times, downright outrageous. When we feel that way, however, we then reflect on the many pressures on legislators, on the long and gruelling hours they spend thresh ing the wheat from the chaff, the need for oc casional humor and relaxation, and the fact that, in our open society, anyone, including a legisla tor, is free to propose whatever sort of law he wishes. Still Why on earth do we need reflectorized license plates (at extra cost) ? Why should they bear the name of the state in letters "as large in size as the numerals"? THE bill has one virtue, which would be the removal of the silly and meaningless slogan, "Pacific Wonderland," from future license plates. One other possible virtue was that it provided a few moments of levity for the serious Senators when it passed the Senate the other day. With the Legislature now working in its 117th day in session, this is something. But the measure is still one which would con vey little positive good on the citizens of the state, and would cost thorn more money, either in Kcud hi ta.Muiuii or m The House should kill it to provide only for the gan. But that's our press for you. Always skimming the surface. Never reporting in depth. Ac tually, Mr. Ba dhams bill will, among other things, do away with all our medical colleges, save the taxpayers zillions and (although perhaps this Is fust wishful thinking) abolish our government. Naturally, I hurried right over to Mr. Badham to con gratulate him on all these wonderful steps forward his bill will take. "It will?" said Mr. Badham. "Good Heavens, I never thought of that." And that's Mr. Badham for and sweepingly progressive, you: He s not only likable he's modest. e i The bill itself Is simple enough. It merely "prohibits teaching in the public schools of any theory opposed to rec ognized sectarian doctrine as factual subject matter." And I'm for that. Christian Science Is certain ly a "recognized sectarian doc trine." So there go our medi cal schools. And we'll have to revise our text books. Like: Oh, Dick, look, look and see. See our friend, the Doctor. The Doctor has a needle. He will stick you with the nee dle." "Oh, Jane, oh. Will that make me better?" "No, Dick, no. Our friend the Doctor is Just a sadistic nut." Why, the Kosher laws of the Jews and the vegetarian practices of the Adventists alone will re quire radical revision of our nutrition texts. The basis of the estimate is prediction that the federal tax cut, if voted by congress, would result in expansion of economic activity to the tune of an annual increase of 30 billion dollars in personal in come and that this In turn would increase state and local tax revenues by $2.0 billion a year for the SO states. The resulting UP in Oregon state taxes Is estimated at 34 million dollars a year. rpHAT Is to say: If you cut taxes In one place, it will INCREASE TAXES somewhere else. Thus far, I'm glad to re port, Mr. Badham's sweeping ly progressive campaign against Darwinism, medicine, pork, meat, monogamy, cloth ing and patriotism has happily won wide Bipartisan acclaim. "At last," said Governor Brown, speaking happily for the Democrats, "the Republi cans have come up, with a program." But will it sell? I doubt it. It's just too idealistic. Of course, the only logical alter native is for our schools to ignore religion completely. Pro and con. Under the doc trine of separating Church and State. It's not that we should fear the Church trying to take over the State. NON SENSE. It's that if the State tries to encompass the relig ious beliefs of all of us, It'll go smack out of its collective mind and collapse in anarchy. Erhard Bolsters Position as Probable Successor to Chancellor Adenauer in Fall Br PHIL NEWSOM UPI Foreign News Analyst It had been an all night bargaining session and dark circles ringed the eyes ot Ger man Economic Minister Lud- wig Erhard when he fin ally emerged. "We did good work," he said. "We avoided d i s- aster." Erhard referred spe cifically to a c Q m p romise tom agreement to end a metal workers strike which had idled a half mil lion German workers and which, if allowed to spread, would threaten the whole of West Germany's booming economy. But Erhard, the portly economic professor, who for 14 years has guided West Germany's economic destines, might well have applied his remarks to his own political future. For his night's work Er hard won a standing ovation from parliamentary members of his Christian Democratic party and went far to assure that sometime next fall he will be elected to replace the aging Konrad Adenauer as West Germany's Chancellor. In late April Adenauer re luctantly agreed to a three- to-one vote of party leaders that this fall he should step down from the office through which he had guided Ger many back from the ruins of Strictly Personal By Sydney j. The things husbands and wives say to one an other in t h e presence o f children sound quite different to the ears of the children than to the ears of adults. This point was forcibly Harna borne upon me a few Sundays ago, when my income tax man came over to help me prepare my returns. We spent a few hours closeted together, and when he left I walked into the kitchen for a badly needed cup of black coffee, and told my wife the grim news. My 8-year-old was muching a cookie in the pantry and overheard my wailing of voice, my gnashing of teeth my pulling of hair. He then quietly walked over to me and slipped a quarter in my snirt pocket. e e' "What's this for?" I asked in surprise. "It's all I've got left of my allowance for this week," he said. "If we're so poor, you'll need that to pay your taxes with." I was much moved. "Now it isn't all that bad," I ex plained to him. "We're really not poor compared to many people, and actually I'm very grateful that we have what we have. It's Just that Income tax time makes most daddies feel broke and hard put-upon. Thanks, any way." ,i What picture must a child get of adult reality after hearing a constant stream of complaints and recrimi nations and self-pity from one parent or the other? How is the child lo know that this exaggerated ver bal response is not a faith ful portrait of conditions in adult life? e e I was able to tell my boy about real poverty In the world - and not too many blocks away from us - with the assurance that we are an especially lucky family, and should thank God for our good fortune. This was a rcla. lively easy matter to straight en out. But I happen to know, for Instance, a little girl whose mother is always complaining about a housewife's role - how hard it Is, how thankless, how martyred she has become to home and husband and children. Most of the time, the woman docs not even know she Is whining - it is so much part of her temperament. The little girl, however. will take her life's-cue from the mother. She will not ac cept femininity, she will al ways feci cheated at not be ing a man. and will uncon sciously resent men In later life. -This kind of emotional crippling is much more com mon than we think." xhc only permanent gifts we can give our children are courage and cheerfulness and an acceptance of difficulties. If parents constantly vocalize and exaggerate their resent ments in the home, this be comes the child's inevitable concept of the world at large. I t defeat to make It one of the most prosperous and power ful nations of Western Europe. He pledged to lend his coun sel to his successor, even though that successor be Er hard, whose ability to run the tough Job of chancellor Aden auer continues to doubt Critics of Erhard had termed him "soft in times of crisis, a rubber lion." But in the metal workers' negotiations Erhard had placed his prestige on the line and that criticism now would be harder to support. It also would make It more difficult, if that should be Adenauer's intent, to maneu ver Erhard out of the Job for which he has waited so long. ' ... Communications ... Statistics To the Ediotr: I respectfully wish to give some statistical Information for the considera tion of our readers. In Amer ica, thankfully, the dissident voice, though contrary to strong ' interests, often can be heard. In "Crime and Immorality in the Catholic Church," a book written by ex-Franciscan priest, Emmett McLoughlln, ihe results of a fact finding nationwide survey are given, Letters were sent to 287 cor rectional institutions - peni tentiaries, reform schools, etc., in the various states request ing the percentages of Catho lics then incarcerated. Al though some exceptions oc cur, the overwhelming pre ponderance of the findings shows approximately two to three times as many Catholics Institutionalized, percentage wise, as compared to the esti mated percentages of Catho lics in the respective state populations. The estimated numbers of Catholics in the states at large, taken from the church itself, are felt to be exaggerated by McLoughlin. He esti mates that the Catholics figure of 42 million in the U.S. is in flated by approximately 10-15 million. If the estimation of the Catholic church is over the actual count, tnen the pre ponderance of catholics, percentage-wise, in the U.S. cor rectional institutions is still greater. But either way, the statis tical findings are a very se vere indictment of the net ef- feet of the morality teaching of the Roman Catholic church and its parochial schools. A local Catholic, in an effort to negate these findings said. "Many adherents to the Catholic faith did not receive the full benefit of Catholic schooling." The statistics clearly indi cate this "lack of benefit" was a blessing. In response to mv personal inquiries I learned the follow ing: . From a local authorita tive source the percentage of Catholics in Oregon is given as "about 10 per cent." (Mc Loughlin quotes the Catholic Almanac as giving 7.4 per cent.) Responses to my letters from the following correction al institutions In Oregon give tnese latest data: Oregon State penitentiary zu per cent Catholics, Hill crest school (girls) 25 per cent Catholics, Woodburn school (boys) 17 per cent Catholics. The implications of Mc Loughlin's book are clear, in deed. We must never relax in the belief that there must De a complete separation of church and state in education al matters. Beyond this, I be lieve it becomes a personal matter what one wishes to do to help the human family in Its search for truth. Irving S. Truly though - vaguely -I am thinking, that I wish I could tell people about the wonderful service of the Jack son County Family and Child Guidance Clinic and Health department. It is hard for me to put It in writing, and I doubt that I could even begin to scratch the surface. However, what I am about to relate to you is and should be of interest to the commu nity. If you will remember the message from the President of the U.S. - in part he stated, "We must promote - to the best of our ability and by all p o a s ib 1 e and appropriate means - the mental and physi cal health of all our citi zens." Which brings to mind Miss Donna Gilkey of the Jackson County Family and Child Guidance Clinic and Mrs. Joan Bass, Health De partment, who have been counseling and cons u 1 1 i n g mentally ill patients outside of their regular office hours. "Phoniest beard success. He now sees Germany industrial growth slowing and he opposes de Gaulle's closed door policies which he fears will lead to European stagna tion. Britian, he believes, would open new trading doors to the Common Market. These were among the rea sons for the repudiation of Adenauer after years of mag nificent effort. Germany's close ties with the West cannot be expected to change regardless of who becomes the next chancellor. Nor can a squabble now dim Adenauer's brilliant record. But Germany Is moving to ward parliamentary, rather than one-man, rule, and that should be to the good. I feel the services that they have rendered have truly been above and beyond the call of duty. Very rare indeed is the duty of after office hours noticed by an individ ual. In a very kind manner and with rare acumen in an ticipating questions, Mrs. Bass and Miss Gilkey attempt to clear the uncertainty and give helpful information. They are truly dedicated and have a kind interest in the welfare of the mentally ill. As I stated previously, I haven't even scratched the surface of the services that they have rendered. M. J. G., (Name on file), Medford Edification To the Editor: To those who question my edification con cerning the things I have writ ten. I was called by "The Father" to be a servant to the Lord, who has sent his angel, and through the power of the "Holy Ghost" has made these things known to me, accord ing to his grace and mercies, toward me. Which calling is spoken of in Gal. 4, vs. 6, and Romans 8, vs. 14 to 39, which is no mystery but a miracle. This generation shall not pass away until the Lord's Kingdom has come, but there are many things that must come to pass first. There are none who will minister or serve the Lord, who are not of this calling. And they that minister, that are not of this calling, are the foolish virgins which took no oil in their lamps, and shall be shut out. For they are of those who deny the power of God, and the Holy Ghost. So deny not the power of God, or the Holy Ghost, and be stead fast in your faith, concerning all things written in the scrip tures, that you take part in this calling. For all they that are faithful in this calling shall take part In the first resurrection. I have made known by my letters all things made known to me, and pray that you will be edi fied by them in time to come. Whosoever s a y e t h that these things I have written are a lie, speaks against the Holy Ghost, and has not the spirit of God in him, and of a truth is a liar. For these things are as sure as the orbit ing of the earth, for who shall stay the hand of the Lord? So doubt it not, and hold fast to your faith. I have been drawn near unto the Lord, in His rightousness, and shared His glory. And in another time, His glory was near unto me, in my shame, and the creature that I am, and my shame was unbearable. There fore I know why it is written, there shall be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, whosoever taketh hold of the Lord shall not bear this shame, but will share His glory. . . Ted M.
