Arrest Clears Cases Of Theft in Medford The arrest of Leslie Eugene Boss, of Portland, who also gave a Medford address, has cleared up a series of thefts occurring at the J. R. Whit ney Oldsmobile company, 415 South Riverside ave., Med ford police have reported. The thefts which had been going on since October, 1862, included a car radio, valued at $130; 13 tires, nine wheels, a jack, a tarp, a spotlight and other merchandise officers said. Boss signed a statement admitting the thefts, police said. Body of Woman Stabbed 28 Times Found in Boston Cambridge, Mass. OJPD The unclothed body of an attrac tive brunette singer, stabbed 28 times and with a nylon stocking and two kerchiefs wound around her neck, was found Wednesday night sprawled across a bed in her apartment. Dr. Peter A. Dclmonico, Middlesex county medical examiner, said an autopsy early today revealed that Miss Rats cause between SI bil lion and $2 billion damage annually to orchards, field crops and other farm prod ucts in the United States. Beverly Samans. 26, died of multiple stab wounds. She had not been raped, police said. Apparently the stocking and kerchiefs were knotted around her neck after she had been stabbed, police said. They said Hie results of the autopsy tended to eliminate Miss Samans as the 9th victim of a phantom stranglcr in the past 11 months. Like the victims of the phantom strangler, Miss Sam ans had close hospital ties and had an interest in music. The other victims either had been patients or had worked in Greater Boston hospitals. Miss Samans, the only child of Herman Samans of Beck- ley. W. Va.. would have re ceived a master's degree in physical therapy at nearby Boston University in June, Her body was found on a couch-bed in the two - room first floor front apartment where she lived alone on fashionable University rd., just off Harvard Square near the Radcliffe College campus. She apparently was slain dur ing the week end, authorities said. There was no sign of forced entry and her door was locked. NEW MOTEL - Construction on a 36-unit two-story motel at 250 Barnett rd. started recently. Groundbreaking was held by officials of Capri Motel, Inc., Portland, owners of project. Construction is by Pacific Development Corpora tion, which specializes in motel building and operating in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Russ Konrad, president, is in the Rogue valley during the two months of construction. A $95,000 building permit has been issued for the build ers by the city building department. The structure will be of brick and wood and will include additional space for a manager's unit. A swimming pool is included in the over all plan. Also associated with- the construction and oper ation of the motel is Ralph Holmes, Portland, president of Reality Loan Corporation. M sT i Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. W ATKINS (Realtor and Tribune Syndicate, tv63) Even Without Flashing Red Lights Animals Can Warn The red light flasnes or glows brightly as a universal sign of danger. Whether on the rear of an automobile, or as a warning signal beside the hole in tlie road, it can mean caution or danger. In the ani mal kingdom other warning devices are used, and all indi cate some state of alarm, dan ger or perilous condition. The warning of the wild, or the semi-wild, may be a cry or a snarl, a waving or lashing of a tail, a sharp buzzing or even a silent action as the raising of hair along the back. It may be visual, such as the white flash of an alarmed deer as it waves its white flag. This is a signal to all deer within seeing distance that not all is right in the world, and all others should take the nec essary action or at least exer cise extreme caution. Other Warning Devices The alarmed or agitated skunk raises its plume-like tail, serving notice that it is ready to defend itself in the only way it has and that the offender should keep his dis tance. The porcupine rattles its quills, pulls its muscles taut which erects it armament and is then as near ready as it will ever be to repel the ag gressor. The raised quills and the whipping tail indicates that its "dander" is up and if a fight is necessary, so be it. The hognose snake, the alli gator, and the snapping turtle hiss like escaping steam from a boiling radiator. Some of the harmless snakes imitate the tail waving of the rattlesnake and succeed in scaring off some of its enemies, while the rattlesnake vibrates its tail and means it. It. gives notice that it is angry. When seeking live food the rattlesnake Is calm and gives forth no warning sound. Stu pid as it is, it does however, know when to give evidence of its presence and when to remain quiet. The honey bee, Inlent on lending to its own business gathering nectar from blos soms, hums quietly along from flower to flower. When she is angry she turns on the steam and increases the tempo of her wing beat. The hum becomes' highpitched to an angry buzz which gives ample warning to any molester that she is mad clean through, and any one in the near vicinity better watch out. She is agitated and will retaliate. The lowly housefly gets angry when made a target for the swatter. She can't get cvin but she can show her dis pleasure by making an angry buzz. Many insects, lacking any physical means of defense, have other warning devices that may imitate a really dan gerous creature. They can re sort to the ruse of acting, or, like the bombardier beetle, can shoot out a vilc-smclling gas that repels most enemies.. Other insects have offensive body odors or may even taste bad. The birds, the- insect's worst enemy, lias no sense of smell, but their taste buds re bel at the flavor of evil-tasting food, and those insects that taste bad are left to go their way in peace. Most birds escape by flight; it is their only way of escap ing. Some of them give the alarm, a warning to all other creatures, that danger is near. By flashing red light, screaming sirens or a cry of alarm, man, as well as the creatures of the wild give evi dence that danger is present or that it is time to be some where else.
