faculty attended the State
Conference of the Oregon
Chapters of the National
Council of Teachers of Eng
lish recently at Oregon State
university. "What's Happen
ing in English in Oregon,"
. was the conference theme. .
Dr. Robert Carlson of the
University of Iowa, and past
president of the NCTE, was
guest speaker. He stressed the
. need for an articulated pro
gram of English throughout
elementary and secondary
' schools.
"The present offerings are
marked by repetition and lack
of consistency." Dr. Carlson
stated, adding that he believed
English teachers ought to be
abie to agree upon a body
of material that would con
stitute a sequence, especially
in regard to grammar.
Representatives from SOC
included Dr. Arthur Kreis
man, chairman of the human
ities division, who met with
the executive committee to
plan next year's conference;
Dr. Richard Byrns, professor
of English, who served as in
stitutional representative; Dr.
Donald Moore, associate pro
fessor of education and Eng
lish, who spoke on a panel on
textbook developments in the
field; and Mrs. Marythea
Grebner, Enfilish instructor.!
New Sports Stadium
Covers Slave Celts
St. Louis - IUPD - The new
downtown sports stadium here
will help cover four slave
cells which before the Civil
War held Negroes offered for
sale.
The cells are in the base
ment of a drug firm to be de
molished. There are no win
dows, ventilation, light or
sanitary facilities. Heavy
foundation stones form the
back of the cells. A brick wall
across the front has a narrow
opening to each cell.

University of Utah, at 8 p.m.

egon College Festival of Fine
Arts.
Dr. Taylor was selected as
the principal speaker for the
first Festival because of his
research activities in the iden
tification and development of
creative talent.
Since 1955, he has worked
ir. five national research con
ferences which were engaged
in tile exploration of various
phases of the creative pro
cesses. Sub topics which have
been explored by these con
ferences include predictors of
creativity, criteria of creativ
ity, education and creativity,
and the influence of environ
mental conditions (including
working climate) on creativity.
