Truman Observes 79!h Birthday Kansas City, Mo. - (UN) -Former President Harry S. Truman celebrates his 79th birthday today, feeling "fine in spite of my youth." The highlights of the day was to be the traditional lunch staged by a group known only as "Friends of Harry S. Truman." Truman was to receive long distance telephone calls dur ing the lunch from President Kennedy, Chief Justice Earl Warren and comedian Jack Benny, "I wish they'd quit remind ing me of my birthdays," Tru man joked. "They only make me one year older." -The lunch in a downtown hotel was limited to two hours this year in deference to Tru man's age. Particularly noted were his stories on legislative reapportionment. Lewis had won a Pulitzer Prize in 1955 while a staff member of the Washington Daily News. Local reporting, not un der deadline pressure: Oscar O'Neil Griffin Jr., for a se ries of articles in the weekly Pecos (Tex.) Independent and Enterprise that exposed the financial machinations of Bil lie Sol Estcs. International Reporting: Hal Hendrix of the Miami (Fla.) News for his dispatches on the Russian arms and troops buildup in Cuba. His stories provided an early dis closure of the installation of Soviet missile launching pads on the Caribbean island. Cariooniii Wins Editorial Cartooning: Frank Miller of the Dos Moines Register. His award winning drawing depicted a world shattered by an appar ent atomic holocaust. Across a vast chasm, one tattered figure called to another, "! said we sure settled that dispute, didn't we?" Photography: Hector Rondon of La Republica, a Caracas, Venezuela newspa per, for a picture taken dur ing a Venezuelan revolt last June. It showed a priest aid ing a wounded soldier and was distributed by the Associ- ated Press. Rondon was under fire when he took the photo, graph. House Approves Labels Placed on Balloon Loaves Salem - (UPD - Fluffy bread loaves will sport "balloon bread" labels starting next year if a bill passed 41-18 by the House Tuesday is approv ed by the Senate. "This Is the most ridicu lous solving of a problem 1 ve ever seen," said Rep. Beulah Hand (D-Milwaukic). "The term 'balloon bread' I'm sure originated in the mind of some newspaperman."
