Someone apparently made out the wrong laundry ticket on the 33-year-old St. Louis Cardinals' southpaw. Simmons underwent the first crisis of his career when he mangled two toes on his left toot while mowing his front lawn in 1953. Some felt he was through when he was sent back to the minors In 1959 and most ex. perls were sure of It when he drew ms unconditional re lease in 1960 after 13 seasons with the Phillies. But along comes this same Simmons with his fourth straight victory Tuesday night and pitches the Cardinals into first place in tne national league by beating the Milwau kee Braves, 2-1 The veteran left-hander no longer owns the blazing fast ball that brought him a ihb, 000 bonus from the Phils 18 years ago but he still has enough stuff to make the Cards happy they signed him as a free agent three seasons back. Allows Four Hits Simmons limited the Braves to four hits and fanned eight in going the distance for the fourth time. His current 4-0 start Is In keeping with his break from the barrier last year when he won his first five straight games. Bothered by arm trouble down through the years, Sim mons was hardly bothered at all by the Braves as he turn ed In the 145th victory of his major league career. Frank Boiling tagged him for a first inning homer, a.ter which Simmons held the Braves hitless until the sev enth. The Cards had no easy time either with 24-year-old Denny Lemaster, who also struck out eight and allowed IHJ0)WLmG nf.t.IMn PIW f.KAnHK Bill's Lady Buga (33-231 3, Nlta Sutton 443; Whltea Midway Serv ice 131-291 3, Doria Dunphy 420. Angels Beat Yankee! In the AL games that were played, the Los Angeles An gels beat the New York Yan kees, 6-3, and the Minnesota Twins defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 8-1. Ken McBride of the Angel had a no-hitter going against the Yankees for six innings but still needed help when the losers rallied for two runs in the ninth. Second baseman Billy Mo- ran, back in the lineup after a four-day layoff due to an ankle injury, drove in two of the Angeles' runs with a home run and a double while Leon Wagner accounted for two more with a pair of singles. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris playing together for the first time this season, each collected one hit and that was during the ninth inning rally. McBride yielded five of the Yanks' seven hits !n winning his second game. Ex Dodger Stan Williams was charged with his first defeat after being routed in the fifth. Bob Allison and Zoilo Ver- salles each collected a pair of doubles in the Twins' 14- hlt attack against the Orioles. Minnesota built a 3-1 lead off loser Steve Harber (4-2), then rallied for five runs at the expense of reliever Dick Hell in the eighth. Camilo Pascual, who lost his first three games of the season, posted his second vic tory. He gave up 11 hits and aided his own cause by dnv ing in two runs with a pair of singles.
