MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON SUNDAY. APRIL at. IMS Tornadoes Thump Indians in Track Encounter 92-30 Some of Ihe fastest times in the state this season were turned in here yesterday when the Medford High school track team rambled over the Roseburg Indians. Final tabulation was 92 to 30. Foot racing portion of the oval and field program saw Medford's district champion Steve Tocws tour the half, mile in 1:57.3 while the Black Tornado's diminutive sprinter. Mike Deibele, sped the 100-yard dash in 9 9 and the 220 in a fast 22.0. Roseburg's veteran miler Mike Crunican rounded his four laps in 4:24.4. And. the Medford relay quartet of Dei bele, Scott Hampson. Rick Larson and Hill covered the half - mile relay in 1:30.7. The Tornado won 11 of the 14 first places. Roseburg vic tors along with Crunican were Barry Grant and Al Joelson. Grant had a fine 51.1 in the quarter - mile and Joelson leaped an even six feet in the high jump. Other Winners Deibele was the meets only clear double winner but Don Driskell look the high hur dles for Medford in a good 15.3 and tied with teammate Roy Shaw in the lows in 21.0. Additional winners for the Bis Wind were Chuck Kim ball with 49-734 in the shot put, Lloyd Mammons with 12-6 in the pole vault, Tim Murray with 135-7lj in the discus, John Tungate with 161-11 in the javelin and Hill with 21-42 in the broad jump. Jim Snndgrass of Medford was close behind Toews with 1:59 time in the half and the Tornado's Dennis Brumback had a 4:27.9 for second spot in the mile. Hill was right on the heels of Deibele in the sprints. Medford recorded sweeps In four events. Driskell, Shaw and Dave Durant were one, two, three in the high hur dles and Durant gained the third spot in the lows. Hamp fon was No. 3 in the 100 and il was Hill, Hammons and Jim Cain in the broad jump. Medford completely domi nated the jayvee competition 107 to 6, taking all the firsts and all but one second. Medford's Linksmen Win Twice Black Tornado golfers of Medford high showed their strength to southern Oregon and Willamette valley com petitors this week end by win ning two four-way meets. Doug Olson paced the way. On Friday the Medfords compiled the low card against 1 North Eugene. Roseburg and Lebanon. The Tornadoes, with Olson the medalist with three under par 69, and a 381 at Shadow Hills links, Eugene. North totaled 394, Roseburg 431 and Lebanon 432. Olson shot one under par 71 yesterday as Medford carded an aggregate of 390, the best it's done on the home Rogue Valley Country club layout. I Marshfield tired 410. St. Mary's 480 and Ashland 516. Bryant Burton's 72 for North Eugene was second low at Eugene on Friday. Tom Clark. Medford, and Donn ' Morrow, North, each had 75s. Clark was also second low for Medford yesterday with a 73. Larry Hartley stroked a 76 for Marshfield. SPORTS MH Tennis Team Gains 7th SO Win Medford high ran its South ern Oregon conference ten nis standing to 7-0 Friday by clipping Klamath Falls 6 to 1 at Klamath Falls. The match score duplicated the Wednesday count over the Pelicans. Klamath scored its only victory in the doubles when the team of Larry Tices and Dave Gcil defeated Gary Highland and Mike Naumcs in three sets. The Medford school had two double winners, Ben Taylor in the broad jump and three fourths mile, Dick Howsley in the 75-yard dash and low hur dles and Sal Esquivel in the pole vault and 150. McCalla Is Top Distance Runner of Year Los Altos, Calif. -0JP1I- Har ry McCalla of Stanford is the top distance runner in colle giate competition this year, according to statistics released Friday by the NCAA. McCalla has the second-best mile time in the country at 4:01.5, compared with 4:01.1 by Oregon's Keith Forman. But McCalla also has the top 3,000 meter steeplechase mark of 9:01. OSU Defeats Cougars, 7-5 Corvallis - (DPI) - Oregon State broke open a 3-3 tie with three runs in the sixth inning and went on to record a 7-5 Northern division base ball win over Washington State Saturday. The decision left the de fending champion Beavers with a 2-0 record in the league and the Cougars with a 0-4 mark. Al Lehrer sparked Oregon State's 13-hit attack with four hits in four trips including a triple and Frank Peters and Harry Demorcst each collect ed two safeties. His tie was in the high Jump at 5-6 with Phoenix's Lloyd Campbell. Bob Bonner nabbed the shot put for the Eagles at 46-3 and Joe Meyer the half-mile in 2:13.9. Honaycutt Doublet Craig Honeycutt triumphed in the 100 and 220-yard sprints for the Phoenix crew in 10.95 and 24.4. Other Pi rate victors were Tod Dole In the high hurdles at 18.25, Dean McDowell in the mile in 5:07.5, Greg Esp in the discus at 118-7V4, Ken Hawkins in the 440 in 55.4. Dale Sauer in the pole vault at 11 feet, Rick Richey in the javelin at 153-lz and Honeycutt, Hawkins, Fred Swingle and Ron Tompkins in the relay at 1:39.8. RR Chieftains Win Combination Meet Rogue River - Rogue River high's potent track aggrega tion shattered two meet rec ords and captured 10 of the 14 first places here Friday after noon in a combined triangular and triple-dual encounter. The Chieftains triumphed in the three-way hassle and in two dual tests during the four meets in one. In the triangular the host school ran up 74 points to 57 by St. Mary's of Medford and 20 by Illinois Valley of Cave Junction as four meet stand ards fell. Rogue River simul taneously won 78 to 44 over St. Mary's and 87 to 35 over IV. St. Mary's trimmed Illi nois Valley 88 to 34. Meet standouts as record breakers were Jack Salter, Rogue River, with times of 4:41 in the mile and 2:06.3 in the half-mile; Tom Darland, St. Mary's with 19 feet 6V4 inches in the broad jump and 52.6 in the 440-yard run. Stel lar Salter's mile time was also a Rogue River school record. Salyars Wins Three Triple victor for the Chiefs was versatile Don Salyer. He won the pole vault at 11-3, the high hurdles in 15.4 and the low hurdles in 21.6. Also for Rogue River, Chris Jones copped the 100 in school rec ord-tying time of 10.3 and took the 220 in 23.6. Other victors for the Chiefs were Larry Craig with 44-5 in the shot put, Tom Davidson with 5-9 in the high jump and the relay team of Ron Waite, Sayler, Allan Gates and Jones in 1:37. For St. Mary's Pete Naumcs captured the discus with 122 7n,4 and Jim Calhoun the jav elin with 176-6. Rogue River was without the services of two men, Bob Pentecost and Craig Phillips, who could be out of action for the season because of injuries. Pentecost, a miler, has a rup tured Achilles tendon and Phillips, a sprinter and broad jumper, a badly pulled mus cle. Some 100 modified and production racing cars were to assemble under the colors of the Sports Car Club of America. $926,000 Paid For TV Rights New York - IUPD - Com missioner Pete Rozelle of the National Football league has announced that the television rights to the 1963 champion ship playoff game have been sold to the National Broad casting company for a record $926,000. That is the largest amount ever paid by a broadcasting network for a sing sports at traction for home television. The 1963 title game will be played in the city of the Western division champion next Dec. 29. Rozelle said NBC was awarded the con tract for one year following open bidding by the networks. Under the old contract, NBC paid $615,000 to televise each of the last two title games. The NFL's single - network television contract for regu lar season games is with the Columbia Broadcasting sys tem at $4.65 million a year.
