The world couldn't look I which

City A's.
Of course, it's still spring
nd the American league sea-
on is barely under way, but
that's no mistake in the stand-
ings-the A's ARE in first
place, and the guy to credit is
Orlando Pena, a 28-year-old
Cuban right-hander struggling
to stay in the majors.
Pena, who "looked so bad"
in the spring that manager Ed
Lopat had to practically for
get him, set the Baltimore Ori
oles down on nine scattered
hits Wednesday night to give
the A s a 5-0 victory and first
place in the AL standings.
It was Pena s third victory
without a defeat and earned
him a spot in the regular Kan
sas City rotation.
A's Blast Miller
A seventh inning single by
ayne Causey accounted for
he first A's run and they
erupted for four more in the
ninth off Baltimore reliever
tu Miller to wrap It up.
oser Mike McCormick bat-
led Pena on even terms for
2, 3 innings.
The Chicago White Sox
;ook over second place by
eating the New York Yan-
ees 6-4 in 12 mmngs, the
leveland Indians beat the
oston Red Sox 2-0, the De-
roit Tigers nipped the Los
ngeles Angels 4-3 in 15 in-
ings and the Minnesota
wins downed the Washington
enators 6-4 in other AL
Barnes.
Reserve Wins Game
I Reserve outfielder Mike
Jjershberger. inserted into the
lineup by manager Al Lopez
ninth-inning deiensivc
placement, singled home the
inning runs for the White
off Bill Kunkel, the sev
enth Yankee pitcher. Hoyt
ilhclm, who extended his
scored on string to 14 13
nings, picked up the victory.
Woody Held s two -run
homer, his fourth of the sea
on. and the combined four
hit pitching of Gary Bell and
Jim Grant paved the way for
the Indians victory over the
Red Sox.
f Al Kaline hit a two-out
homer in the bottom of the
.15th inning to break up the
game into overtime when he
doubled across two runs in
the seventh.
Camilo Pascual, beaten
three straight times, finally
won his first game, although
the Senators touched him for
eight hits. Lenny Green and
Vic Power each drove in two
runs to pace the Twins' at
tack. t INI SLOHLS
