' WEDNESDAY. APRIL 24. 1963 President's Sister 'In Background' (Editors note: This is the third of five profile - inter views of "the other Kennedy women" the President's sisters and sisters-in-law. To day's subject is Pat Kennedy Lawford.) By VERNON SCOTT United Press International Santa Monica, Calif. - Url -Pat Kennedy Lawford has succeeded in a most difficult accomplishment she has managed to stay pretty well in the background although her brother is President of the United States and her husband a movie star. At 35, Mrs. Lawford rep resents the Kennedy family on the West Coast. Califor nia casual is how she describes New York Mrs. Peter Lawford, sister of President Kennedy, has succeeded in a most difficult task - manag ing to remain in the back ground even though her broth er is President of the United Stales and she is married to a well-known actor. (UPI). her life with her husband, Peter, and four children in their beach - front Santa Mon ica home. Like her famed sister-in-law, Jacqueline, Mrs. Law ford is in the process of com pletely redecorating her Spanish-style home, which previ ously belonged to the late movie mogul, Louis B. May er. Tall, slender and athletical ly inclined, the President's sister is "in" with the Holly wood set, and was a mem ber of the socially active movie crowd long before her brother became president. Meet at Convention She had worked for Kate Smith and the National Broad casting company in Holly wood before she met her husband-to-be. And when they did become romantically in volved it was at the 1952 Re publican convention, of all places, where both were spec tators. In April of 1954 the cou ple was married in the Ken nedy family home. The bride's brothers were ushers for Ac tor Lawford. Because the Lawfords duck publicity they rarely venture to motion picture premieres or parties in night clubs, pre ferring instead to entertain at home. Occasionally they can be found having dinner with friends at LaScalla res taurant in Beverly Hills. Mrs. Lawford, however, is far from the typical Califor nia housewife. Works With Children She is a member of the board of directors of the Ken nedy Chi'1 Study Center in Los Angeles, spending many hours a week working with the children. She also is an active member of SHARE which provides for orphans in countries throughout the world. When lime allows, the Law fords dash off to the Riviera Country club, a 15-minute drive from their home, for 18 holes of golf. Lawford says that his wife is the better golfer. They also ride horseback, and Mrs. Lawford is a tcn . uitili Privacy prevails when the couple swim it's in the family pool rather tnan the ocean whose combers break only a few feet from their patio wall. Mother of Four For the most part Mrs. Lawford's life is devoted lo her children. Christopher. 7. Sidney. 5, Victoria. 3. and Robin. 1. In the past year Lawford produced his first movie. "Johnny Cool." and Mrs. Law ford was a frequent guest on the set. At home two servants care for the housekeeping and rooking, although Mrs Law ford is an accomplished cook herself. In the evening when friends drop by and most of them are show folk it is not unusual for Pat to retire to the kitchen to pre pare a snack. She dresses in colorful and very chic blouses, shorts and Capri pants around their rambling house. In public she is attired expensively and in the height of fashion. President's Favorite A great fSYDfttt of the President's. Mrs. Lawford was surprised on her birth day last year when her hus band took her to a plane and flew her to San Francisco. where more than a dozen of the Lawford's friends had gathered from Hollywood for a dinner party. The President, although not present, was in on the conspiracy from the beginning. The Lawfords visit Hyan nis Port, the Florida White House and Pennsylvania ave nue every year, most of the time taking their brood along. She still admits it is a great thrill to visit the White House where she and Lawford fre quently spend the night on visits to the most renowned Kennedy of them all. Both Pat and Peter keep their ears to the ground politically, too. 4 $ Regularly 5.98 to 7.98 cotton, dacron and cotton, seersucker, rayon linen, print jackets. I Forsake "Clan" The Lawfords no longer are members of Hollywood's i so-called "clan." Rather, they mix socially with a wide va riety of picture people, from . Janet Leigh and her husband i to song writer Jimmy Van Heusen and producer Arthur Loew Jr. Around these people, indi-1 i viduals she has known for i years, Mrs. Lawford's reserve breaks down and she moves easily in the conversational give and take of "show biz."
