In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS MEDFORO MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON As this is written, a dis patch has just come over the wires from Washington "re vcaling" that OWYHEE, the name given to Idaho's south west county, to a range of mountains and to a river that flows out of Idaho into Ore gon, where it furnishes irri gation water for a rich agri cultural area in Oregon's Mal heur county, is derived from the earliest spelling of Ha waii, our nation's youngest state. The dispatch goes on to say that the story was "disclosed" in Washington the other day in a report from the office of H. Max Hanson, Idaho admin istrator for the Farmers Home Administration, to I d a h o's Senator Frank Church, who relayed it on to Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who is a good Democrat from Hawaii. ACCORDING to Hanson's report, the name of the natives of the Sandwich (Ha waiian) Islands was nriuin ally rendered from phonetics into English as OWYHEE - that being the nearest anv. one could come to the sounds made by the natives when they pronounced it Since the Sandwich Islands were an early, though rather out of the way, stop-over point for food and water for English vessels headed for the North west Coast of North America it was natural for some of these Hawaiian natives to be picked up and brought along. Tf ANY of these "Owyhees" " joined trapping parties into the interior, and in the early 1800 s three of them were lost in what the Hanson report describes as the water sheds of a large unnamed riv er and were presumed to have been killed by the Indians. The river where this occurred, the report says, was named, in their memory, the Owyhee River. The Hanson report con cludes by noting that Island missionaries later changed OWYHEE to HAWAII and adds that "nowhere else does the old spelling survive ex cept to designate the moun tains and the river in South west Idaho and Malheur coun ty, Oregon." reached Sandwich Island Riv er, so called, owing to two of them murdered by Snake Indians in 1819. There seems to be no doubt that the Owy hee River was named for these Hawaiians, for on June 15 of the same year Ogden uses the word OWYHEE. The name OWYHEE was gener ally used a century ago for Hawaii. "The first sailing vessel that came into the Columbia River after the Astor venture was the American bark OWY HEE. Owyhee River drains a large area in Oregon and West ern Idaho, and there are oth er geographic features bear ing the name, derived from the name of the river. There is also a community of OWY HEE near the mouth of the Owyhee river and also an Owyhee Ridge in Malheur county. WELL, it's interesting. " But Mr. Hanson is a lit tle previous in assuming that his report is the first to bring all these facts into the focus of history. Oregon's Lewis (Tarn) McArthur beat him to it by nearly half a century. In his Oregon Geographic Names, he says: "On Saturday, Feb. 18, 1826, Peter Skene Ogden, then on his second expedition Into the Snake River country. rNE can't help wondering " how much news was con veyed to Senator Church of Idaho and Senator Inouye of Hawaii by these researches of Farmers Home Administra tion researcher Hanson. Senator Church is a gradu ate of Stanford. He served during the war with Military Intelligence in China, Burma and India. He undobutedly knows his way around. Sena tor Inouye was born in Ha waii;' he has an A.B. degree from the University of Ha waii and J.D. degree from George Washington Univer sity. He is a retired captain in the U.S. Army. It is rather probable that he won't be much surprised to learn of the origin of the name Hawaii. And, by the way, this whole story of the origin of the name Hawaii is carried in de tail by the World Book En cyclopedia. But, at any rate, it seems to have been news to Hanson. 1DY THE way - Whence came the name Sandwich Islands? They were so named by Captain James Cook for his friend Lord Montagu, Earl of Sandwich - who is presumed to have been the first to put a slice of meat between two slices of bread and eat it from his fingers. Search Continues For Mt . Hood Youth Hood River - IUPII - Search continued south of here to day for a 16-year-old boy miss ing since Sunday afternoon. James Thomas Akms of Mt. Hood left his parents' home on his bicycle apparently to go fishing. The Hood River county sheriff's office started the search Sunday. j I jB j I s" IvV1 ( atr ' Portland State Building Given Committee Vote Portland-il)Pl-A $3.7 mil lion physical education build ing for Portland State College was approved by the building committee of the State Board of Higher Education Monday. Deputy Chief of Staff, Systems and Logistics How Perkins gets all of that in his brief case is a mystery to me. At any rate. Flood wants to know why a "food packet abandon aircraft, individual' costs 54.95 whereas a "food packet, in-filght, individual' costs only 51. Perkins replies thai tome types of prefabricated meat are more expensive than other types of prefabricated meat. Flood: "What in the world is prefabricated meat?" Perkins: "Prefabricated meat is boneless . . ." Flood: "Before you go any further, I had a type in here from the Army who read off a list of meats he was buying using boneless liver. I said 'boneless what?' 'Boneless liver.' Is there any other kind of liver?" Perkins: "No sir. I believe what they meant, sir, is frozen and portion-cut liver. AH these meats we refer to as prefabri cated, they are boneless, ex cluding liver, boneless, frozen and portion-cut." Silent Dan ' parted com pany with prefabricated liver at this point to explore the question of why the Air Force finds it easier to recruit nurses than the Army does. Do you pick them with blue eyes and they look better in a blue uniform? lie asked. "What do you have-keep this decent-that the Army does not have?" The answer was flight pay. Flood moved on to service men's underwear. He told Col. Elizabeth Ray, head of the WAFS, that he was responsi ble for eliminating khaki lin gerie. "I wore them, sir," said Col. Ray. "I am glad you did."
